Last time I was here was probably more than 15 years ago, so when perusing the Alexandria Restaurant Week list and seeing RT’s, I figured it would be nice to try it again! This time I took 3 others who had never been here.
Upon walking in, we were all a little taken aback by how dated it looked, the ceiling fans spinning in the bar area and small it was, but no one said anything to each other about this until towards the end of the fabulous meal we enjoyed when we all agreed this place was amazing!
The food was all very freshly prepared and all completely made in-house. Their various seafood items that we ordered (like their famous Jack Daniels Shrimp, Blackened Mahi and Shrimp Diane) were very fresh and VERY tasty. All of the various sauces were spot-on and packed lots of individual flavor. The blackening on the Mahi was done excellently (screaming hot skillet with spices cooking and then toss in fish), whereas a lot of places claim to make blackened dishes only to use the spice and nothing more.
The table bread was actually very good and so was the butter that came with it… We also loved that there was so much extra sauce in the dishes we ordered that we got to enjoy sopping with the bread! Their gumbo was OUTSTANDING!!! Lots of great flavors and spices and nice & hearty!
For dessert, their bread pudding was very very tasty, but so was their chocolate mousse! The only thing the mousse lacked was some of their amazing homemade whipped cream on top.
Service was incredible… Our server was on-point, extremely knowledgeable, packed all the etiquette you’d expect at a much nicer restaurant and very helpful. He did an amazing job taking orders without writing too! Lastly, their wine and cocktail lists were very nicely put together! The wines were very good for the price point and matched the food perfectly. They have a cool, unique cocktail list also.
Overall, this was an excellent visit and I most definitely want to return, get me a large bowl of gumbo! This is what restaurant week is all about, trying something new and wanting to return, so kudos to them for participating!!
