This was my second visit to Florence and as such I was aware that most of the staff in hotels do not speak English so this was not a problem for us as it was for some others. I was also aware this hotel did not have a lift thanks to other reviews on here. What I was not prepared for was the lack of customer service.

We were made to feel like an inconvenience. The hotel was mostly clean but there were some parts of the bed room which were not.

The beds were not comfortable and when asked for a second pillow the hotel staff informed us that they did not have any as the hotel was full.

We asked for the wifi code as wifi was offered with our room. We were informed that it was broken and not available however because of the attitude of the staff member I suspect this was not the case.

The room did come with a Fridge but it was very poor and did not cool anything. I suspect this is why food is not allowed to be stored there.

The rooms contain long lists of everything that is "forbidden" and no information on what you can do. The hotel staff also have overall control of all air conditioning units so we had to ask to be able to use ours. Once it was turned on we were still unable to control it ourselves. The only way we could turn it off was by opening a window.

Finally when we went to check out at 7:30 (for a 8:30 train) there was no staff around and the service bell on reception had been removed. We could see a member of staff sat in the breakfast room/bar but the door was locked. She then ignored me for 10 minutes whilst I was knocking on the door. Eventually she came to reception to check us out.

At this point we thought things could not get any worse. However she then took our passports (which the hotel had held) out of an unsecured drawer behind the desk. This is not an appropriate place to keep such important documents.

We left the hotel pleased to be heading to new hotel for the remainder of our holiday.

If you are planning to visit Florence I would advise against staying in this hotel.

There were only two good things about this hotel the location just 10 mins from Il Duomo and the room was clean. The staff were dismissive and rude the fridge did not work which was dismissed with a shrug. Breakfast was poor . The bar/ restaurant/ breakfast room are all the same room the bar never opened. No mini bar, no lift and no help with suitcases which my friend and I both in our 60's had to lug up two flights. They couldn't even respond to my attempts to greet them in Italian. Definitely would not recommend. A shame as it could be a lovely place but clearly tired and uninterested.

The room was approximately clean, I found something on the toilet, but wiped out with a napkin. Maybe it was some lotion during cleaning and was not well washed. Nevertheless, the bathroom was clean. It seemed a little hotel. We didn't had any problems with the a/c. Run all night if you want it to, easy to program. Breakfast was basic: juices, muesli, corn flakes, sweet yogurt, milk, hot coffee, dry bread, fresh bread (you could toasted it with a toaster on the table if you wanted to), butter, jam, cornetti, muffins, buccellato (hope I guessed it), spinach with cheese pie (first 3 days). The downside was that if you wanted to store some food in the minifridge, there was a warning that the food will be removed. But we can't be sure that this is not an overall rule for all Italian hotels around there. The staff was nice and friendly. Didn't have any complaints with them. At the end, after the check out, they were kind enough to help us, by deposit our baggage until we left in the afternoon to the airport. We didn't asked for help with the taxi as we learned our way to the central station in the few days of our vacation.

I see some reviewers have an issue with the staff at this hotel not speaking English. Unfortunately, they might have an issue with Florence, in general. The people in Florence speak Italian, unless you go to the Uffizi or other touristy places. A chain hotel might be better for those that expect English.
When I studied in Florence I vowed to return and stay at Il Duca. I saw the beautiful marble tiles in the reception area, and it just seemed like a beautiful place. My husband and I were glad that we did! The rooms are indeed beautiful, the staff is friendly, the breakfast excellent, and the espresso superb.
