The tone of the negative reviews for this place coerced me to give it a try. We drove for an hour cross country from San Gimignano and arrived around 13:00 without reservations. I’ve never been mistaken for Italian, but I have my stock of rehearsed...phrases and asked, “Non abbiamo prenota. Avresti una tavola per due?” Leonardo came back with some Italian to the effect of, “I’ll have something in 15 minutes. Go walk around and see the country around here. “ So we did. We came back and sat on a bench outside until he told us our table was ready. He parked us, poured us some Vernaccia and set down a board with a Tuscan sampler: 2 pieces each of bruschetta pomodoro, pecorino, Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto and coppa di testa (like our Louisiana hog’s head cheese but firmer and less greasy). For primi, we selected pici aglione (made with the milder “elephant” garlic) and a raviolo con cinghiale. For a secondo, we split a dish which I think was called Rosticiana ( note to self: snap a pic of the chalkboard menu next time), pork marinated overnight in prunes, peaches and grapes. The house red wine was quite nice. Leonardo had one cook and one busboy to attend to the two of us and 10 other customers (at four surrounding tables). The food and service were delightful. We were the only non-Italians there and did not feel slighted in the least.More
