Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I stayed one night due to an emergency when we had to disembark from a cruise ship docked nearby. The front desk manager, Gabriel, was exceptionally helpful with our emergency arrangements, including directions to the train station, train schedules, taxis, and hotel suggestions and booking at our next destination. Our room was very clean, spacious, and the included breakfast was very good. Gabriel at the front desk was polite, efficient, professional, knowledgeable, and very sympathetic to our emergency situation. He rates 5-stars!

Stay away from this hotel! I checked in for a 3-night stay for business. The AC is as bad as it gets. The rooms are steaming hot and impossible to sleep or feel rested. Hotel staff are completely useless and unable to do anything about it. And seem to be mad that I'm even complaining.

Room Tip: Book rooms overlooking the sea front, although the rooms at the back are pretty quiet.

The hotel is built using the walls of the old city and has lots of character. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful. Although parking is limited they got me a place in their underground car park nearby and once that was not available they allowed me to park in front of the hotel in one of the two spaces available. The hotel itself has lots of character and is well decorated. The rooms are comfortable and airy and clean. Breakfast is served in a downstairs room and there was a well stocked continental buffet available. The hotel is close to the sea and also the city centre where there are many attractions.

Good - view from the window was great of the port. Bad - uncomfortable beds, very uncomfortable pillows. Room is outdated and in need of repair. Bathroom was gross, the drain hadn’t been cleaned in ages and the shower kept filling up with dirty water. Overall wouldn’t recommend.

The hotel while in a great location was let down by the rooms and noise. The room was dark and hot as the air conditioner wasn’t working. The Napier was from above and around the room as it echoes when people are walking or talking and there were a lot of unsupervised kids running around the corridors. The breakfast was continental and was very poor, not fresh and unappealing. On the plus side was a few minutes walk from the harbor and had some lovely restaurants around it.

We have been choosing this hotel for the proximity to the harbor/embarking for Corsica. They have a private garage to be paid on top vey close to the hotel. Room OK with a nice view on the touristic harbor. At the restaurant we had gambas with peas cream and gnocchi with seafood sauce. All OK with a white Vermentino wine.

Grand Duke is a middle class hotel but is very good for its category. Building itself, looks to be a part of the old fortifications (it is not), that Ferdinando built at port of Livorno. Actually a statue of Ferdinando is located almost at the entrance of hotel. For the price of a double room is more than satisfied. The entire building looks recently renovated. Rooms are small but clean with an excellent view to port of Livorno. Restaurant it serves delicious dishes of Italian cuisine. There is a menu for hotel guest with up to two choices without extra charge. Best thing, as my point of view is the location of hotel, almost at the center of city, no need for a ride, you can walk around on the market and big squares of the city. For the end I would like to refer to warm and very professional staff of the hotel.

I stayed 3 nights on a business trip. I was given a family suite (2 double and a single bed), which had a large bathroom with walk-in shower. However there were no windows in this room, just ceiling windows, so no view of the sea which was a real shame. Even worse, the blind was broken on one of the ceiling blinds, so my room was bathed in sunlight a dawn! Whilst the bathroom and bedding was clean, the wooden floor was filthy. I don't think it has been cleaned in months as my feet were black after 10 minutes walking around bare foot. My colleague stayed in a room down the hallway. Hers had huge windows overlooking the sea, but had a small bathroom and very tired decor. We booked both rooms at the same time, so really was luck as to what you got. I didn't try the breakfast, but my colleague said it was limited. The fresh fruit on the second day was green with mould.

The Hotel Gran Duca was a concious choice for us. We wanted to stay centrally, close to Livorno's port area and at 4 stars, moderately priced hotel. Gran Duca offered just that. Room was large enoughm beds comfortable, A/C was in a working condition (it was over 30 C every day), decent shower and OK bathroom. Nice and helpful people at the reception. Many rooms are facing the port, which is just across the street from the hotel. You could see yachts, cruise ships, fishing boats, and a deep blue sea.
