What travellers are saying
- Angelo SHilliard, OH3,630 contributionsYou cannot come to Lucca without experiencing the walls. Whether you pass through one of the six large Ports that allow pedestrian and car traffic or one of the smaller ports that are pedestrian only, this magnificent wall is truly a sight to see. Besides being used to separate the centro from the rest of Lucca, it has walking paths on the top, restaurants, a hospitality center for those walking the via Francigena, and the original places for the soldiers that used to patrol these walls. There is a lot of history here.
In addition, there are places to picnic, playgrounds, and art installations. On warmer days there will be musicians playing and artists drawing or painting the sights around them.
Or, you can just walk along and enjoy the sights or take a bike ride down the wide avenue that allows you to walk all the way around the city in a contiguous loop.Written 7 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. After paying the 6 euro admission, we headed up the wide stone steps. About halfway up, the steps changed to a metal staircase but were still wide enough to let others pass by. Only the last couple flights were on a very narrow staircase that was only wide enough for a single person. There were plenty of wide landings and rest areas so it was hard to believe that we had traveled over 250 steps once we reached the top. The shade from the seven trees at the summit was nice as we walked around and enjoyed the views.Written 30 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - angeleyes27Brigantine, NJ5,196 contributionsThis area is a square (actually a round circle) with cafe's and shops. It was once a Roman amphitheater where gladiator shows took place and later fortified. You enter through quaint arches and are encircled by shops, cafes and other buildings. I found it picturesque.Written 24 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ArtsyGalBaltimoreMaryland831 contributionsLovely cathedral. The Jacopo de Quercia Illario di Carretto statue is quite lovely in a small chapel on the right hand side of the church. Il Voto Santo is under restoration and now supine in a room visible from a large glass window and accompanied by a video, describing its loving restoration.Written 9 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ninon SMontreal, Canada25 contributionsAbsolutely outstanding! A MUST IF YOU WANT A TOTAL EXPERIENCE!
We tasted some amazing wines, actually loved them all. The site is enchanting, set in a typical Tuscany style . Every wine is paired with food, so be prepared to eat plenty! We had the privilege to spend the afternoon with the owner himself and bonus , with were joined later by his father, the original! Winemaker!Written 9 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MrMrsHappyRLiverpool, UK1,223 contributionsBeautiful basilica in the town of Lucca. The building has striped brickwork which adds to the impressive effect. There is also a large tower adjoining the basilica.Written 11 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dw0175Maynooth, Ireland87 contributionsEnjoyed our visit and seeing some costumes and the piano. The costume from Madame Butterfly was being restored. Entry to the museum was on one side but tickets have to be purchased first in the shop on other side. Then you have to ring a buzzer to get entry and go up a stairs to enter. Bit of a palaver to get in but we e joyed the visitWritten 1 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- holibobinAberdeen, UK223 contributionsOn a visit to Lucca you will for sure visit Fillungo. This is the main shopping street - it is narrow and long and typically Italian in feel. Full of amazing small shops ranging from handmade leather shops to ones selling olive oil , there are so many original clothing shops for children, women and so many men’s fashion stores. It is unique and honestly just a joyful experience to walk from one end to the other and enjoy the noises and smells and the sight of everyone just enjoying their day. Also so many gelateriasWritten 10 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- OrdinaryJoe&CoWest Wales155 contributionsWe visited the tower as part of a 3 ticket deal which included the Guingi Tower and Botanical Gardens. Don't forget to chose the time you visit.
This was our favourite tower, it was certainly not as busy as the Guingi, it is higher and you have the bonus of the bells at the top.
As with our review of the Guingi, no history just our observations/advice.
First thing first, its worth the visit, we loved it up their, shaded on top, great views, less visitors (we had it to ourselves for half of the time we were there) and the bells (more about the bells later).
Finding it - I know this sounds odd, because it is one of the tallest buildings in Lucca, but you do have to look for it. At street level the entrance is very discreet. So pay attention, its straight forward - we used the Google Map App on our phone, but it is a low key entrance.
Effort - It's a tower, it is one of the tallest structures in Lucca, so you do need a certain level of mobility and fitness but as we have said about Guingi - don't be put off. Take your time and visit it.
Head for heights - as before, unless you're a genuine vertigo sufferer you'll be fine.
Guingi vs dell Ore - which one if you can only do one? We would do the dell Ore, for us we found it the nicer tower, less visited, great view etc
Those bells - time to point out the obvious - this is a clock tower, that means that one of the bells chimes the hours on the hour. You are standing directly under the bell, so you will get to experience it. It is NOT too loud and if you monitor the time on your watch/phone you can plan it and capture it on your phone/camera/video/GoPro. We enjoyed that, it makes for a very atmospheric video, starting with the bell being struck and panning out across the city - your chance to be Frederico Fellini. Don't forget, on the three site ticket you're asked to chose the time of your visit here, so you can plan this.Written 22 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
