Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Janiculum (Gianicolo) Hill (Colle) contains a large park area with pleasant walking paths, scenic overlooks, and historic monuments to those who fought for the unification of Italy. It is also where the Botanic Gardens are located. It is adjacent to both Trastevere and the Vatican yet it is pleasantly devoid of tourists. First time visitors to Rome are unlikely to make this a priority stop but returning visitors might want to see Rome from this perspective, especially on a nice day.

We found this place by accident. We were wandering through the lovely Villa Borghese, heading towards the Piazza del Popolo and wondering how we were going to get down the hill to the square. That's when we came to this look-off point. The views of the Piazza and of Rome were very nice.

But this is also a pleasant place on its own. There were lots of people milling around, enjoying the sounds of a street musician, having drinks and picnics. A good place to relax after a hike through the gardens or to just people-watch.

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Rome staying at the Romanico Palace Hotel (Review to follow) and a good local friend took us on a drive to see of the sights we wouldn’t ordinarily see.

One of these involved peeping through a Keyhole from which you can see St Peter’s Basilica! What was even more interesting was that it was a rainy evening and there was a queue of people in front of us - all of whom had walked some distance for the Keyhole experience!

As was early evening - and a wet one at that - the view was not very clear so we’ll ensure we return to the Keyhole on a nice, sunny day (when our friend informs us the queue can be 50 yards long or more!) the next time we’re in Rome!!

The Appian Way is well worth exploring for a different view of Rome. Outside the city is pleasant countryside where you can see the old Roman road, including a part with original paving. There are also ruined mausoleums in pleasant parkland. We took the bus out and then walked part of the way on a sunny but not hot afternoon - don't try this in high summer!

Park was a nice break from all the crowds, nice walking area. Highly recommend. Several blocks away there is a cute restaurant with nice drinks and sitting area.

This was a beautiful escape from the busy city, quiet and serene. Loved to see all the different roses, there was a lot of space to walk between them and take a closer look without damaging them. Quite a lot of people, but it didn't feel crowded.

I'm not a zoo fan. In my entire life I have visited (unless I am mistaken) only six zoos, including this one. The reasons are understandable: I don't like animals being in cages.
However, having a six year old granddaughter and having to spend a few days in Rome, I had to make this concession to her, and we visited the Biopark.
I was pleasantly surprised by the presentation that the Biopark makes of its mission: to contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity, through practice and education.
Beyond the statements of principle, one characteristic of the Biopark struck me very favorably. That is, that it tries as much as possible to avoid purchasing animals, and to maintain and enrich its collections it makes use of judicial seizures - whenever it can - of animals held or transported illegally, and which could not in any case be released back into the wild.
I learned for example that the three brown bears owned by the biopark (one of which presented us an impressive performance - see my photo) were all seized from illegal owners; and that the same applies to 70% of the animals present in the reptile house.
So I left the biopark happier than I was when I entered.

Rome is known as the water city; as the heart of the then empire, engineers had to work out how to transport more water possible to satisfy the city's population needs. Is possible to see in this park six of the eleven aqueducts that transported fresh water to Rome.

Not all aqueducts are of Roman origin, there is one of Medieval origin and some of them are juxtaposed one to other.

This is a popular park where locals like to hang out, picnic or simply for sport purposes. We rented some bikes in the area and we biked throughout this park, Tor Fiscale (nothing of great interest) and the Appian Way which is somehow tricky to get there but not impossible.

P.S. closet metro stations are Lucio Sestio or Lucio Agricola

Located near the Castel Sant Angelo this little island in the river Tiber is nice to have a look at. There is a ruined bridge (Ponto Rotto) from Roman times on onze side. Views from the walkway near the waterfront are nice. There are some bars on the island.

After having watched a cover on TV about Villa Torlonia and especially concerning the time when il Duce&family lived there, we decided to visit Villa Torlonia. (Underground bunker wasn't open to public with "normal" entrance tickets, maybe only groups with guided tours like for the theatre, can see the bunker).

Visiting Villa Torlonia was a great idea! Already the +/- 30 min. walk from the Diocletian Baths to villa Torlonia was very interesting, calm, well kept residential area with plenty of gorgeous palazzi to admire! Many of them are embassies right now.

Villa Torlonia is in fact a huge complex!
Buy a combiticket for villa, owls house, casino.

The park can be visited for free (we saw families having lunch/picknick in the shadow of the trees, some joggers were running around ...). The park looked in desperate need of landscaping, a lot of weeds, no water in the small abandoned lake close to the theatre .... not really a "garden like" park, but the dry weather doesn't help to improve the situation.

Visit includes the spectacular main house/villa, a lot to admire inside, on the 2nd floor you can also see art (Roman school).

Casino hosts a temporary "art"!? exhibition, very quick visit ...

Casina delle Civette/Owls house, very special. A lot of multicoloured windows to have a look at. For my personal taste however limit "kitsch".

We enjoyed our over 2 hours visit to Villa Torlonia very much as it was a special place to spend quality vacation time away from the stressful actual Roman mass tourism 🌞

To return to Roma Termini we took the bus 82 opposite the main entrance on Nomentena.

Recommend a visit of the Villa Torlonia.

But be warned that the limonaia-"restaurant" in the Villa Torlonia park isn't a highlight for a nice pit stop, terrible service, maybe a quick drink at the counter and then bye bye.

We liked our walk along the tiber/lungotevere in the shadow of the old trees. Watch your step, because "sidewalks" are dangerous in some places.

Some good options for picture taking ... (bridges, castel San Angelo ...).

This is a lovely quiet oasis in Rome. When we went, we were the only ones there the entire time we visited. It's quite a small garden as botanical gardens go, but if you wander the paths up the hill you can spend an hour and if you are interested in checking out the herb garden more deeply, you might stay longer. Good views over the city and if you walk out of the garden at the the top of the hill and take a left you'll end up at the Triton Fountain and if you go right you'll end up at the Garibaldi Monument as well as a small cafe. All of these have spectacular Rome views.

Beautiful, small garden with nice view. It was crowdy, but still wanderful. Worthwile visiting it, especially if you do not want to wait too long to take a glimps through famous keyhole which is close to this garden.
