Burial place of the kings and queens of Aragon, but also a living monastery

Just a short bus ride from Montblanc. An amazing site in the middle of vineyards. it must have been a mini city in its heyday. Caught the organist rehearsing during our visit. Awesome sound. Restaurant Masia Sagues, a short walk away was great value for an excellent lunch.

Finally a 5-star rating

Just back from a long tour through Spain visiting historical benchmarks and this, of course, was making top of my list. Founded as early as 1150 this monastery performed a very important act in Catalonia’ political life. It was renovated in 1940, a long time after it was abandoned in 1830 and it hosts Benedict monks every since then. It is amazing how many Spanish kings and queens are resting here. It is in great shape, very well maintained, this is another reason this place is on the UNESCO heritage list. The staff is very helpful and respectful, another rare thing. Young girls mostly they come and tell you things without even asking. We were there early, another good thing, parking at discretion and very few people to step on your toes. We were lucky we got to see the cloister, as we were leaving one of the girl told us we cant go visit any longer because the monks are praying and that was off limits now. Therefore, if you are planning to visit this place go early morning, they open at 10:00, I think. I will not tell you about the church, the altar and everything else, they are all gorgeous inside out. Just go see it for yourself. I attached a bunch of beautiful pictures as well. Cheers! 'Beautiful Catalan Gothic Architecture'
jún 2019 • Priatelia
The Poblet Monastery is a cistercian monastery, 12th century and UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Amazing Gothic architecture and the artworks of Gothic sculptures are well preserved.

The high Altar is beautiful.

Remember the place closes between 12.30 and 15.00. The carvings on the high Altar were incredible and dates back to the 16th century by Damia Formen. It's Chapter House is a perfect square with slender columns.

Amazing but beware the 12:30 - 3PM siesta!
mar 2019 • Páry
After visiting Montblanc we decided to drive to the nearby monastery of Poblet. This is the largest of the 3 royal monasteries in the area dating from the 13th century. Probably. Most importantly it had a big car park (almost empty) and clean toilets (also empty). We then found out why, it was closed for a siesta between 12.30 and 3PM and we'd arrived at 1. Words were muttered but we had a walk around the bits we could get to, which certainly were impressive, before heading off again to the second of the 3 royal monasteries. After visiting that it seems that Poblet is larger, more ornate and easier to get a sense of scale so try and visit in the morning!

A Wonderful Surprise. Worth a Visit.

The Monastery in Poblet was worth the visit. We stayed at the Hotel within the monastery grounds which enhanced our experience. It allowed us to see the grounds at night and tour the monastery the next morning. The guided tours are very informative and the architecture is stunning. Take a walk around the south side of the monastery to view the overall complex from the grape vineyards. Beautiful.

Worth a visit

Visited with a tour arranged by the Travellers' Century Club. Historic site founded in the 1100s which contains graves of the royalty of Aragon. Built in many styles over the centuries of use and partially burned and destoyed by the locals after the monks abandoned it in the 1800s. Restored in the mid past century and still used as a monastery today. It has a huge restored communal dormatory upstairs which you will want to photograph and many interesting features. Restrooms and a gift shop are on site.

went at the end of the day and was able to stay to hear the Monks singing which was lovely

The monastery was open later than we expected and it was lovely. Not crowded, a bit cooler and the service started at 7.00pm so we were able to sit in and listen. The cloisters were also a highlight
