al centro di Licata troverete il palazzo del Comune in puro stile liberty realizzato dal Basile, un luogo che riesce a suscitare emozioni al turista attento

Questo palazzo molto grande che domina la piazza del Progresso al termine del corso Vittorio Emanuele è in stile Liberty e all'angolo ha una piccola torretta che rende caratteristico questo edificio

Purtroppo non è valorizzato come meriterebbe un tal monumento che ben rappresenta l'ideale civile dell'architetto Ernesto Basile , massimo esponente del liberty siciliano dei primi del novecento ; le architetture di tale artista le avevo ammirate solo a Palermo , sono rimasta favorevolmente stupita di trovare a Licata tracce molto significative del suo operare , forse ai massimi livelli. Purtroppo l'ente civico che ha la fortuna di occupare tale monumento non è sicuramente rispettoso nel preservare e riparare ai danni del tempo , ma appare INCURANTE e non degno di custodire il palazzo che dovrebbe essere trattato come un museo da preservare .

Domina la Piazza Progresso , centro politico della città e centro nevralgico degli ampi corsi che caratterizzano l'impianto urbanistico di Licata , che in passato aveva il rango , la struttura , la classe borghese / imprenditoriale pari ai centri maggiori della Sicilia.
Testimonianza di questo Passato fulgore è anche il palazzo di città (come recita l'originaria iscrizione sulla facciata) tuttora sede del civico consesso e del sindaco , opera del Basile che ebbe modo di operare proficuamente ai primi del Novecento , chiamato dai più ricchi ed illustri esponenti della borghesia imprenditoriale e massonica , I Verderame . Di prim'acchitto semplice la struttura con un corpo centrale che termina con una torre merlata che accoglie l'orologio e fa da torre campanaria ; certamente l'autore sapeva che il suo palazzo sorgeva presso la sede di una chiesetta , che andava a sostituire simbolicamente il potere temporale della chiesa con quello laico , dello stato unitario . Frequenti e, abilmente celati ma non troppo , i riferimenti all'epoca dei comuni , comunque all'età imperiale , attraverso fregi, decorazioni , elementi in ferro battuto . Testimone dell'ultimo secolo , nel suo continuo declino, necessiterebbe di un accurato restauro e, certamente di un uso più attento da parte degli impiegati e consiglieri comunali che lo affollano e non lo proteggono nella sua artistica specificità .

Ho avuto modo di visitare questo palazzo, opera del famoso architetto Basile, alcuni restauri presumibili agli anni 70 sono discutibili, attualmente necessiterebbe di un restauro conservativo. Tuttavia mantiene il fascino delle antiche costruzioni.

Il Palazzo di città è uno dei monumenti più rappresentativi di Licata. Costruito da Ernesto Basile in pieno stile liberty, ad inizio del ‘900, venne ultimato negli anni ’40. L’intera struttura sorge sui resti della chiesa della SS. Trinità, risalente al XVII secolo; dello stesso periodo anche la campana della torre, proveniente dal quartiere spagnolo.
