We love this trail!

My husband and I are active empty nesters. He’s in his early 60’s, I’m in my mid 50’s. There were 4 other people in our tour group, all in their 30’s. We enjoyed the day until it rained. Nothing you can do about that……..

We would normally bike on our own but we liked the idea of having lunch provided and not having to cover the same part of the trail twice in an out and back to the car.

We met on the trail in St. Germain. Erich (tour guide) loaded our bikes on a trailer with lots of other bikes. The trailer had a secure holder for each bike. I think there was room for about 8-12 bikes but I didn’t actually count. The conversation in the van reminded us of what we like when we stay at a bed and breakfast. We learned a little bit about each person in the group. Erich had some interesting stories about when he guided tours out west and in Hawaii.

Erich unloaded bikes after we reached our destination. My husband and I brought our own bikes and helmets. I have neck issues so I’m very picky about riding another bike and I like my own helmet. The other people in the group had bikes and helmets provided by the tour company. I think there were a couple sizes in helmets and multiple sizes in bikes. I asked if I could try one of the bikes and rode it around briefly. It was a nice bike with a comfortable seat. I asked one of the 30-something guys who had talked about biking when he was younger and seemed to know a lot about bikes what he thought. He said he liked the bike he was riding. Erich drove the van. His wife rode with us on the trail. Their kids were also riding in the van and I think they helped with setting up the picnic. They were well behaved and courteous.

The trail is awesome. Much better than the mostly straight and flat Rails to Trails we are used to. Nice curves and elevation changes but nothing too difficult.

The picnic provided on the tour was nice. Nothing fancy but more than a boxed lunch. Several kinds of deli meat for sandwiches with 2 kinds of bread and various condiments, fresh fruit and veggies, green leaf salad with a few different bottled dressings to choose from and cookies for dessert. There was more on the table, but that is what I remember.

The most frustrating part of the tour, was our own fault. I like to stop for pictures and when we got behind I thought we could catch up to the rest of the group easily. We ended up calling Erich in the van to make sure we didn’t make a wrong turn. Later, when it started to rain, we got ahead of the group trying to go faster to get out of the rain. We ended up taking a wrong turn - even though they had put up a sign where we were supposed to turn. Our plan to not be wet, ended with us being wet and temporarily lost. We had to call again for instructions. Erich and his wife were very nice, she went out to look for us and even though they were probably very frustrated with us, they didn’t act like they were upset. During the whole lost in the rain fiasco, I fell off my bike when I took a corner too sharp and gashed my leg on my bike pedal. Kind of embarrassing. They had a nicely stocked first aid kit they let us use. They offered to help if we needed help but I let my husband be my doctor while they tended to the other people on the tour.

I would do this again. Next time I would consider using the shuttle service so we could bike the whole trail …..AND I would pay closer attention and not get lost.
