Excellent but few tree identification labels
feb 2021
Visited the Parkland (only part of Knighthayes open because of COVID) on a warm sunny day. Everywhere was looking smart and well cared for. I’d come to see all the champion trees and identify them by species etc. Sadly, very few of the trees had labels on them less the large Deodar and one Scots pine and some oak varieties by the kitchen garden so I don’t know whether I saw the champion turkey oak and others mentioned on the website.
Sadly access to the Douglas Fir row was not possible because access is via the kitchen garden which was closed (why? What COVID risk?). A gate leading to the Douglas Fir (DF) row was padlocked with a No Access sign on it. Why? There’s a path on the other side leading to the DF row so It must be in use normally. What’s the COVID risk? There is no sign indicating the way to the ‘tallest redwood in Devon’ which I think is somewhere on the Impey Walk. I couldn’t find any info on the Impey Walk on the website and noted that the sketch map was out of date and not showing the car parks for example.
But what a superb parkland and all the better for being dog friendly with lots of benches and brilliant loos.

GARDENS TO ROAM FREE!
dec 2020
As necessary in these difficult times, we booked in advance, plenty of times available weekdays. plenty of parking on arrival at 10.30, reception was well organised as usual. We enjoyed meeting a friend and having coffee & chocolate cakes in the park followed by lunch snacks & tea later. The only problem, all the picnic benches had been removed so we had a longer walk to find a dry bench to sit to enjoy our snacks. Worth taking something dry & waterproof to sit on. We were lucky to have a clear day so we could sit to eat and admire the far reaching views on the estate. Everything is well cared for and maintained, So lovely to enjoy beautiful countryside in these weird times.

Huge walled garden ...
okt 2020
An imposing façade this house gives a glimpse of times past, although inside it has
quite a modern feel in places. No queues to get in when we were there.

The formal and walled gardens still had a bit of colour in the borders and the kitchen garden was huge, with its exotic plants hidden in the top most corner.

Wet and windy visit
okt 2020
(House closed) Despite the inclement weather, we had a very enjoyable walk through the gardens. Negotaiting the Douglas Fir Walk was a bit tricky and slippery, so wellingtons are recommended if there has been recent rain. The back of the property is a revelation - everything so well presented and bags of character.

Wonderful autumn escape
okt 2020
The most user friendly paid entry NT site that we have visited during the pandemic. Made to feel vey welcome, and great to see that they were encouraging those who hadn’t booked in advance , if space allowed.
The grounds are stunning, a perfect escape from the madness of 2020.

Extremely disappointing
okt 2020
Very disappointing. Only a very very small part of the house was open. Certainly not worth queuing for. The National Trust have handled COVID very badly.

Dear Derek J, I'm sorry you felt disappointed by your visit. We have worked hard to find a one way route around the house that ensures visitors are able to see as much of the house as possible without having to double back on themselves or pass in tight corridors as our primary concern is to ensure a safe visit for everyone. This does mean that the first floor is closed for now, as are two ground floor rooms. We do state on the website, on our welcome leaflet and in the booking information that only the ground floor is open at the moment, but we are working on ways to open up these areas safely in the future.

Queuing spoils the experience
sep 2020
There are some places that have got their Covid queues sorted out - unfortunately the National Trust isn't one of them. In spite of prebooked tickets there were queues to get in, queues for the toilets, queues for the restaurant and a 30 minute queue to get into the house. Even when in the house there was a long slow moving queue, so in the end we aborted the house entirely. The gardens were interesting, however, with a mixture of formal and informal planting and woodland areas - not overcrowded. There were plenty of colourful blooms - even in September.

Disappointed
okt 2020
Beautiful parkland setting spoiled by lack of garden maintenance.
Friendly welcome by a young man in reception was spoiled by his colleague in the cafe who was surly and rude to us and her colleague. The catering offer was very poor, the cafe freezing cold and the furnishings appeared to have been gathered from a car boot sale.

Dear Westcountrybill Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Knightshayes. I’m really to happy to hear that you enjoyed the parkland and about the friendly welcome you received on entry. I’m sorry about the service you received in the café and have passed this onto the Food and Beverage Manager to pick up with her team so we can make sure it doesn’t happen again. We do have limited food offer at the moment as mentioned on our website and I’m sorry you couldn’t find anything to tempt you. We do change the offer on a regular basis with seasonally inspired one-pots and cakes and have re-introduced brunch. We are also working hard to return to our normal offer as soon as its possible to do so. Unfortunately the Café can get a little chilly at this time of year, normally the doors would be closed but in an effort to keep everyone as safe as possible the doors have been left open so that visitors don’t need to touch them to go through. We know some areas of the garden aren’t presented to their usual high standard and are working hard to make up for lost ground. During normal times we have a team of eight Gardeners and a large volunteer team looking after the gardens. However, when lockdown hit and, in an effort to protect charitable funds, all but two of the Garden Team were put on furlough and the volunteers were unable to come in. This means things have looked a little different to a normal year. The Yew bushes have only recently had a haircut and the team made the difficult decision not to plant the wide range of crops in the Walled Garden that they normally would as they wouldn’t be able to care for them, instead planting a green manure. Consisting of red and white clover, chicory, and Phacelia to improve the soil ready for 2021. Whilst these may look like weeds, they are an important part of the management of the productive garden and will make next year’s display something special.

Dear Loverivercruising. I’m so sorry you feel that Knightshayes shouldn’t have re-opened. During normal times we have a team of 8 Gardeners, 2 Rangers and a large team of volunteers caring for over 250 acres. As lockdown hit and, in an effort to protect charitable funds all but three of the outdoor team were put on furlough, carrying out essential tasks only, and of course the volunteers were unable to come to the site. Nature, of course continued without regard to the unprecedented situation and our team are working hard to gain the ground lost this year. Nature is import, and although some areas aren’t presented to their usual standard we’ve had lots of positive feedback from our visitors who are happy to be able to enjoy the gardens and parkland once again.
