"Bucket List" item--the reason for a long drive through the desert to get here
mar 2020
INCREDIBLE! The wildlife (seabirds and Sea Lions along with Humboldt penguins) is so prolific and active that it is hard to believe. There is far more to see here than there is in The Galapagos Islands.

The high speed boat ride to the area is wonderful. We ran into a pod of Dolphins on the way our and the captain stopped the boat to let us enjoy the sights.

The islands are very stark because of the lack of rainfall, but they are beautiful in a surreal sense. The rock formations and the blue ocean really make it wonderful.
The bird activity adds the life to the area.

We were lucky to be able to see the guano collectors in action--it is quite a sight. The work is obviously "not fun" but it is interesting to see something you have read about for years.

We were one of the first boats out for the day--the crowds were non existent, but we were told they could be crazy. It was easy for the captain to get the boat into ideal viewing locations. The picture opportunities are almost overwhelming!

Prior to our trip, we had no idea this location existed. It is one of the top highlights of the trip--not to be missed!

Great

This is an eye opening experience, but sit on the left side of the boat for better viewing! We saw 1000's of birds and 100's of sea lions. The boat was fine and the weather also.

Peaceful Beautiful and Unforgettable

This is one of my favorite destinations. We were able to observe different types of wildlife at a very close range. Then we went to the museum. Beautiful experience!

For bird and animal lovers!
mar 2020
We were there on a good weather day, but the ride out is very relaxing. Once there, the landscape is not only rugged but beautiful with an amazing array of birds and sea life. Could have spent the entire day there! Really great trip for people on a short schedule.

A fantastic place to watch sea animals and birds from a short distance. And enjoy the big ocean waves in your little boat.

Amazing bio-diversity!
mar 2020
This was billed as a "mini Galapagos" which I think is an exaggeration, but it is still definitely worth a visit. We paid 50 soles each and got a covered boat - which was key because the sun is brutal and it's too windy for a hat. We got the unexpected bonus of going by the "Candelabra" which is a giant carving in a hillside facing the sea. Similar to but also very different from the Nazca lines. We were there the first of March and were happy to find that February is birthing season for sea lions. There is a beach that is actually called the maternity ward because that is where sea lions go to give birth. It was absolutely crawling with sea lions! We also saw a species of crab that only eats guano and lots of orange star fish. The bird list is much longer: Humboldt penguin (we only saw one because most have left this season), Peruvian diving-petrel, Peruvian pelican, Peruvian booby, Neotropic cormorant, Red-legged cormorant, Guanay cormorant, American Oystercatcher, Blackish Oystercatcher, Kelp gull, Grey gull, Peruvian Tern, South American Tern, Inca tern.

Only reason to come to Paracas!
feb 2020
Paracas is not pretty, nor clean. It really has no appeal for the international traveler except for these Islands. And It's worth a stop over just for them!

Lots of tour operators, don't bother booking in advance, prices are cheaper in person. Boats are comfortable but many don't have tops, bring sunscreen. The front of the boat is less prone to being a splash zone than the rear.

There are penguins, but not many. Don't expect a good picture without a zoom lens.

So many birds and sea lions. If you are a bird lover, this is a must.

Unique natural environment
feb 2020
It was a privilege to visit these islands by boat early in the morning. Our trip left from the hotel jetty. We had a chance to see the Nazca "candelabra " up close which was a nice add on to our flight over the Lines a few days before. The islands of course are brimming with bird life and the boat was able to get quite close to the cliffs to watch them.Quite bizarre having a tiny Humboldt penguin and an enormous pelican in the same photo! There is plenty of opportunity to see the sea lions basking…there are hundreds of them, including babies. The history of this place is interesting too. At one time the value of the Guano ( bird poo) was worth more as a fertiliser to the Peruvian economy than gold! No-one is allowed to land on the islands apart from the wardens who stay there for three months at a time. They are a protected site. I have not been to the Galapagos islands, but my trip to Ballestas must surely have been nearly as good?
