Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The last time I was here, it rained and a rainbow hung right over the New Athos Monastery.
This time it was sunny and the domes burned with gold.
The territory of the monastery is large, clean.
Inside the Panteleimon Church, beautiful frescoes have been preserved on the walls and domes, but there is a general feeling of neglect. Certainly worth a visit!

Every place like that deserves its share of our attention since there we really feel the calmness of our world; and no matter which belief you particularly prefer.
It's a very interesting monastery with its history, despite the fact it's not so long.
The very atmosphere as inside that as around its territory is so smoothing and views are so fantastic that you almost forget about all your current day problems :).
Along all the ways to the monastery there are a lot of local merchant traders - try some local wines and fresh citrus juices, especially made from mandarins :).
Better to go there individually and in the very morning in order to avoid crowds and lack of time; at the very frontier you without any problem could hire a local taxi (just trade :)) or get a regular bus there (some about one hour and a half from the very frontier); and do not worry - the track there is not so mountainous as many people think :).
God bless you and stay happy! :)

Remember this place since Soviet days and happy that this place survived many collapses, wars and tragedies! Very historical and somewhat cultural. Needs a lot of repair and restorations, especially inside of the main cathedral.

It's a bit of a trek to get up to the monastery from the road, but it's well worth the effort. The monastery is in very good condition and seems to have been recently restored. The ancient paintings inside are also very impressive. This is the highlight of a visit to New Athos.

A stunning monastery with an interesting history. The Bishop showed us round and was willing to give us his views on a number of issues as well as pointing out specific icons of interest.

New Anthos monastery is a huge Orthodox cathedral sits on a hill . Nice construction very impressive . It shows the legacy of Abkhazia. You cannot take pictures inside the church but you can capture nice sunsets in front of the church, because it's looking out to Black sea. It's a good photographic location I guess. Girls have to wear special dress to enter the monastery but it's provided by them. Go there and enjoy your visit

The New Athos Monastery of St Simon the Canaanite is a wonder to behold. A very well preserved and revered place, you walk in and feel elevated in the eyes of whatever god you hold in your heart. The detail and paintings will have you in awe as it is remarkable and with constant refurbishments they are able to keep it looking great. The only downside was the vendors outside who hawk their wares and with their voices drifting into the house of peace it takes away from it a bit. Still a lovely place to visit and we would recommend you see it if in New Athos.

The monastery sits on a hill looking out to sea (Black Sea) and from a distance looks very impressive. However, when you arrive you will see the sad state it is in but considering its history and survival under the Soviet Union it is still here and that's saying something. I understand that monks have returned and is visited by thousands of pilgrims and tourists alike - so I'm sure money will start flowing and refurbishment take place.
The internal wall paintings are again in a sad state, though still very impressive.
As it Orthodox custom, women must cover their heads. The monastery has a box of scarves at the entrance for women to use.
