Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'm glad we visited Pointe du Hoc. It was interesting to see the German munitions sites. It's amazing that the American troopers were able to scale the cliffs so quickly although there were a lot of casualties. This is one of those places were seeing it first hand increased my understanding of what took place here.

So VERY disappointed today to drive all the way here from England only to be told that because we had a dog, we could not even read the first few info boards...even though my husband was carrying the dog and the boards were not yet even on the Pointe site just on the lead up lane. We even offered to put our dog in a bag at this OUTDOOR site...this is acceptable at Omaha Museum! Why not here? We had come to honour the memory of those often very young, courageous American soldiers who fought here to help liberate France and to learn more about their heroic actions. Sadly we could not do that at this very pognant site due to bureaucracy gone completely bonkers. The site was so quiet today, too, but the day so warm we did not dare leave our dog on the van. I really hope this site will rethink its rather unnecessary rules or maybe perhaps provide a few large open crate kennels. People travel a long way to visit these sites and can't always afford to just come back. Perhaps the rather excessive security on the door would be better placed in the car park since there are all the warnings about thieves thete rather than turning interested people away who are doing nothing wrong.

A huge granite pylon positioned atop a German concrete bunker with tablets at its base inscribed in French and English overlooking the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc on the left flank of Omaha Beach. There are steps on the side of the monument where one can walk down to the bunker section of the monument.

We had a great time here I both the exhibition and the grounds but these are far more restricted than they were when we visited two years ago - which is a shame and the reason for this is not obvious. Still enjoyable visit and a place to reflect on the sacrifice made by so many for our future.

This is one area of the D Day landings that saw some serious challenges encountered by the American invasion force. They had to scale the cliffs to be able to secure the gun battery. What they didn’t know was that the intelligence which said that the Germans had large guns had in fact been moved further down the coast and what looked like heavy guns had been substituted for large diameter wooden poles. The main fire power was coming from the Germans from the Maisy Battery which continued to shell the allies on the beach for several days after the initial landings. The site offers commanding views of the coast and one can only imagine what the outcome would have been had this stronghold been fully operational at the time of the invasion. The whole site is littered with bomb craters even after nearly 80 yrs they are still huge although now reclaimed by the fauna and flora. We didn’t have time to visit the onsite museum on this visit.

A windswept piece of land up on a cliff with commanding views of the terrain as far as the eye can see.

Generally excellent and the American Battle Monuments Commission deserves praise for its work there. The only two criticisms I have concern poor communication of information.

When you leave the visitors centre to walk towards the cliffs, there are a lot of information boards for your edification. These boards are actually metal ( stainless-steel ) plates with the information printed first in French ( black script ) and then in English (light-blues script )

Now these two colours clearly highlight the different languages, but whereas the French is easily discernable in black, the English is very difficult in light-blue on a silver background. The designers were perhaps more concerned with what "Design Monthly " would say, than use by the visitors.

The other point is that there is no - absolutely zero - information about anything German on the site. I would have found it very interesting to know how many German soldiers there were in different bunkers: how long they stayed there, where they slept etc.

This was for me such a glaring omission that I can only think the ABMC has a remit that only permits it to report on American/Allied matters at its sites>

This is an important sight if you are a WW2-buff. There is a nice path guiding you around the area and several stops with good information and stories of what happened here on D-day. They have also personalized it by presenting some of the individual rangers who took part. I found it very emotional

Things have changed at Pointe du Hoc, and not for the better. I have been coming to Normandy since 2002, and I have visited the Pointe over a dozen times. 97% of the point is now fenced off, and has been so for the last 3 years. The wild weeds and bushes have taken over and the few info panels are faded and very hard to read. They have put signs about preserving the site, but from what???? There are numerous other batteries and emplacements that are open to the public or in private hands such as Maisy, Longues sur Mere, WN 60, WN 62 Crisbec, Azeville, Merville Battery and dozens of others in France. All of these are accessible, can be visited and they are able to cut the grass and remove the bushes.

Impressive to see what a German battery really is and what remains after so many bombs have been dropped on it.
