Praça Victor Civita, ecological oasis

Located in Pinheiros, near the Largo da Batata and Marginal, it is easy to go through the region in the day-to-day running and not even know that Victor Civita Square exists. Despite its discreet charm, it is a milestone in the history of a São Paulo that seeks more sustainability.

It turns out that in this space not always inhabited a square. On the contrary, from 1949 and 1989, on the corner of Sumidouro street there was a garbage incinerator, which ended up being deactivated by the development of the neighborhood. After the decommissioning of recycling cooperatives began to give new use to the place, the incinerator, however, left marks: a soil deeply contaminated and unfit for human life. Thus, around the beginning of this century, the City Hall then made an agreement with Grupo Abril to revitalize the space.

For that, it took an intelligent architectural process that ended up winning big awards for sustainability. Since you could not step on contaminated soil, the square is mostly built over a raised wooden deck - so we can walk there without touching the ground. Not to be missed, the square also has green areas, through trees, a circular garden and hanging garden, a work of landscaping that demanded new lands and technology. There, rainwater is also reused for the plants and, after treatment, for cleaning and toilets. And if that were not enough, the area lighting made with LED and is a recycling collection point.

With the revitalization we not only gave sense to a lost area in the city, but also gained a new public space of conviviality and culture. So there is also a bleacher of the place that can house 400 people. There has already been the stage of concerts and festivals, such as that of Urban Agriculture that took place this year, and every Thursday at 7pm there is Cine na Plaza, a free outdoor cinema with popcorn. The incinerator building, also renovated, now houses the sustainability museum. Victor Civita Square is also an exercise facility, providing fitness equipment for senior citizens, and receiving yoga and pilates teachers daily.

Since the beginning of the year, however, when Abril ceased to take care of the Plaza, which was once again maintained by the city hall, the number of open activities seemed to decline, and the site that was broadcasting all of them is off the air. But this is another reason why we should put the Square in our daily lives, so that it is increasingly used and inhabited, and not a corner again.
