About
Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Market is a tourist trap with highly overpriced goods and hard selling tricksters. Calling surrounding area “sketchy” is an understatement - dangerous is more appropriate. Avoid the risk of crime and assault - in particular at dusk/night.

The worst tourist-trap in the world.
That place disgusts most paulistanos (brazilians from São Paulo city).
Visiting an ilegal casino in any third world mud-hole would be way better than even pass in front of that place. Mercado Municipal is a scammers paradise.
You can find those fruits in literally any supermarket of Brazil. Any Brazilian bakery shop have way more delicious sandwiches than that HORRIBLE mortadela sandwich. There ia nothing of interest in that place and the block around it is PUTRID.
Never go there.

Do visit this popular attraction, I got lost in the spice section:-) After walking through the seafood, spices and fresh food around you will be so tempted to try some of the foods and there are many to select from. I bought a number of pastries including the popular pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) in Australia - they did not disappoint!
Donot miss this sensorial experience.

When you come in to market you will be approached to taste fruits . Ask how much it costs. Warning if you taste without asking they might charge you a lot of money!!

This is a market selling spices, fruits, fish, meats, olive oil, etc. Excellent market if you want to experience how locals shop. Lots of small restaurants and cafés inside. Gate 8 is a good entrance and exit for UBER users. Good experience dining as well.

Insane over priced fruit. $20 for one dragon fruit and one road apple. Lame AF. Costs $2 at a regular market. Highway robbery.

The area doesn’t feel safe - particularly the walk between the cathedral and the market. Inside the market the vendors pester you and try to overcharge you when you want to buy. Not worth visiting

Fun experience in a large city food market set in a beautiful old building. We were told to keep our iPhones inside our pockets for fear of being mugged however I didn't get this impression at all. I think you just have to be smart about usage. The fresh and exotic fruit stands are a fun stop as the sales people offer you a wide variety of fresh and exotic fruits to sample with hopes you'll wind up purchasing. Be careful however as the fruits are so darn good, you'll wind up what I did in buying $100 of fruit - however every bite is a burst of flavor so it's well worth it. They sell the fruit in various sizes and I wound up getting the larger plate which turned out to be $110. There are meat stands. nuts, beverages and a wide variety of other shopping stalls. It can get pretty crowded so keep an eye on your friends, family and belongings. Uber easy in/out through clearly marked door numbers to make meeting your ride much easier. Plenty of security guards are located all around so again I felt totally safe.
