- helenandpaul13Worcester, United Kingdom1,645 contributionsOne of the finest places I have ever visited during my history of travellingI took an organised trip of the temples of Angkor Wat and this was the first place we visited. We arrived well before sunrise and after purchasing tickets, which cost $37 for a day pass, we were driven to the site. It was very dark when we arrived because if was about 5.30am. First we had to cross a man made walkway which is like standing on thick sponge. We made our way along the path to the site of the temple and stood some distance from it waiting for sunrise. There were lots of people in front all trying to get a spot where you can photograph the temple and catch its image in the water ahead. Once the light emerged there we all were snapping away, before we retreated a short distance so we could observe the sunrise over the horizon. As the sun came up the enormity of the site came into view. It is magnificent and I would have paid double just for this view. After further pictures our guide took us over the bridge to the temple entrance. We were shown wall carvings and other items and the guide gave us a description of how the site was initially a Hindu site which then transformed into a Buddhist temple. There are parts of the site where you can see the Hindu gold and others displaying the Buddhist red. After walking round the first level, we walked up towards level two where the guide gave us further details of the site. After that we were provided with the opportunity to head to the top level. Now access to this level is up about 45 very steep steps with a handrail at the side. People with a nervous disposition or those with walking difficulties may find access to this part tricky. Because, once you get up there you have to come back the same way down steep narrow stairs with only a handrail. In cold and wet weather, without sensible shoes this could be a nightmare. After some time on the top level the guide took us round the back of the second level where we could get more pictures and he also showed us the centre of the entire complex. There are ruins of empty pools and there was also a space for people to pray. We then made our way back over the bridge towards the entrance where we could get a clearer view of the man made walkway. You can run out of superlatives to describe this place and it's easy to understand why UNESCO made this a world heritage site. Visitors should just remember to dress respectfully as there are limits to what you can and cannot wear, have comfortable shoes on your feet and try not to have a fear of heights if you want to see the vastness of the site from the very top. In summary, the title of this review says it all. It's one of the most beautiful sites on the planet and worth every dollar. A great big thank you to the driver who kept us supplied with water bottles and to the guide, Sen Prourng, who gave detailed explanations of everything and took lots of pictures for us. We saw four temples in all. See my separate reviews on the places we visited on the tour. An unbelievable experience.Visited March 2023Written 19 March 2023

- ShaneLondon, United Kingdom7 contributionsStunning!!!Angkor Wat is a magnificent temple complex that is truly a sight to behold. Its stately towers and spires reach to the sky, and its splendid walls are adorned with stunning bas-reliefs and carvings. It is an awe-inspiring place that is sure to leave a lasting impression.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 March 2023
- Kev FarrellU.S. Virgin Islands4 contributionsAmazing! It's definitely worth a great place to visit! We have seen its pictures on internet but we had been so supprised when we were here. We wondered how they can make these ourstanding temples with unique sculptural decorations. We had only 3 days in Siem Riep and we hoped we could have a few more days. Highly recommend you to buy 2 days tickets!Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 22 March 2023
- lindaepp85Canon City, Colorado8 contributionsBeautifulVisited the site 2 times. The first day we did a three temple tour with a hired guide that the hotel arranged. He was wonderful and spoke great English. He was a walking encyclopedia of information and we really appreciated that. We opted for the three day pass even though we only went 2 days. It was the same price and it kept us from having to go back to the ticket office on the morning of our sunrise tour. The sunrise tour was amazing…..a must see.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2023
- EvolvingHong Kong, China43 contributionsBeautiful, peaceful, hotWe had an amazing visit to Angkor Wat, Angkor Tom and surrounding temples. Our guide (amazing, Sam So, happy to share his contact info), told us March and April are the hottest months of the year. We were pretty much alone the first afternoon - Friday - but there were more people on Satuday. We adjusted to accommodate for the heat, cutting out the middle part of the day. The third floor of Angkor Wat was not to be missed. Prioritize that if you must cut down. We also went to watch the sunrise on Satuday night from the one place where it is allowed. Amazing. Highly recommend getting a guide but it's not essential.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2023
- Teijo YHelsinki, Finland8 contributionsAnkor Wat tour with guide Sopheap RatherI had an amazing day with Ankor Full-Day Tour by Join-in luxury MiniBus. The temples are an must ,once in a lifetime experience. But the trip there was perfect because we were lucky to get a SUPER good guide name Sopheap Rather. His knowledge about Cambodian history and culture and the various temples was very informative and interesting to listen. He also had a great humor that made our whole group happy. he was the best tour guide I ever had, I`m 65 year`s and been to 97 countries. Highly recomend his cervise if you want to make this great trip 100% successful.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 March 2023
- Yvonne SSan Clemente, California87 contributionsA MUST SEE!An excellent morning touring this ancient temple. We had a great guide as part of our Uniworld cruise. He explained so much of the history which is an absolute must. The day was absolutely sweltering with temps and humidity but we took enough rest stops to drink much needed water. The highlight was taking the very steep steps up to the top of one of the towers. Not for the faint of heart. The staircase is extremely steep and the handrails were burning hot!! Even scarier going down but worth it!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2023
- Zefy S4 contributionsMy expectations were exceededIts great when something you have always wanted to see not only meets your expectations but exceeds them. We did the sunrise tour through our hotel and it was worth it. Was very peaceful and respectful considering the amount of people there. The colours of the sunrise were spectacular. No photos or words would do it justice. It is something everyone should see and enjoy for themselves. I was genuinely surprised at how well preserved Angkor Wat was. I was even more surprised at how much access you get and suspect this will get tightened in the coming years to ensure the temple is not destroyed by tourism. You do need a guide to get all the history of the various areas and the bass reliefs freezes on the walls. Ours was very ordinary so I won’t recommend him however we were able to hear other tour guides who provided a lot of information and it does give you a good understanding of what you are seeing. We also saw Angkor Tom and Ta Prahm temples and I have to admit after Angkor Wat I preferred Ta Prahm to Angkor Tom because of all the trees growing through the walls. It was very hot when we were there. 37 deg and high humidity. This does take a lot out of you so ensure you have plenty of water. I went through 4 bottles in a few hours and I was very grateful that our tuk tuk driver always had a cold towel and cold bottle of water waiting for us.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2023
- Min Cen QingOttawa, Canada10 contributionsA must-doComing here and admiring one of the marvels of the world. You'd better to have a local guide who will share you the background of the temples and interesting legends. A sunrise tour would be much great as it'll not very crowded like in the day time, and the most importance is you can take the super stunning pictures. Highly recommened!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2023

I know it's a very beautiful place and phenomenal buildings but.....
1) $37 for 1 day just wasn't worth it.
2) All the amazing pictures you see are aerial views and you just never get that wow factor.
3) So many people meant you were just moving in a permanent queue with no chance of a decent photograph.
4) No information along the route explaining the history of the buildings, so you're forced to join a group and guide.
It's wrong to criticise such an incredible site but it really was a disappointing day out.

So nice I went twice. I’ve never experienced anything like it. The entire complex functions as a time machine. The tourists entering the complex look like they’ve walked through a wormhole...new world meets old world. The Temple itself is packed with art, symbolism, history, and extraordinary architecture.

This temple faces west, but all the advice says to visit in the morning. All the buildings are in shadow in the morning. Better advice would be to come and see Angkor Wat in the afternoon, or early evening, when the setting sun illuminates the detailed carvings and the architecture. Also, way too many tourists!

I know it is so good, but I did not expect much since I have seen several temples and pagodas in the past. But since sunrise, until such time we enter the temple, it was so breath-taking. Worth the time going there. Every where in the temple and the compound, it is beautiful.
Best if you visit the area during sunrise!

Beautiful place amazing complex with the most beautiful carvings. Although admission prices have almost doubled since, and prices of surrounding hotels also reflect this increase.

A must place to go. The history and magistracy of the temples is breath taking. Be sure to get a good guide, long day depending on the number of temples visited but worth it.

Must do with a guide. We did it as part of a 4 temple tour, and you would be amazed by the history there is. Sure the guide books would have the information as well, but for US$25 for someone to take you around and show you is money well spent.
Our Hotel organised it all for us the night beforehand (shoutout to Khmer Boutique hotel) and we did the sunrise tour. To which they brought us back to the hotel for breakfast before going back and starting the tour of the 4 temples plus royal palace.

Hi, I am planning to visit Angkor Wat on 13th & 14th April'24, which falls on the Khmer New Year dates - are temples closed on these days? Can I go ahead and buy 3 day pass for visiting the temples ?
Sorry. I have never been during the New Year.

Hi,
They laminate the pass for you, with a rather wide margin all the way around. The size of the laminated pass is 3 3/4" high x 5 1/4" wide. Have fun!

Same as previous response. Arrange a guide through your hotel (whom will help arrange you buy the permit). We went in April 23 and it was fantastic.

Yes, there is one area with steep steps at the back of the compound in which you can see the view from the top, but it is in no way mandatory to do. The steps up to the first floor if I remember correctly are a little high but are in no way near as challenging as the ones I mentioned previously.
Also, you don't have to necessarily go inside the compound as the walk around it is plenty beautiful as well. There are quite a few gorgeous temples in the immediate area that don't have many steps either like Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm.
