An avenue from better times
sep 2017 • Priatelia
Not only Salaverry Avenue links the seaside with old historical downtown but it has endured many foolish mayors and the chaotic growth of Lima (who had less than a million inhabitants in 1950 and now has more than ten million.... this Avenue has a bike road in its center, it was before a road for horses from the neighbor old polo club and horse racing tracks. The polo club was turned into a military club after the 'military revolution' of Velasco (1969) and the old 'hipódromo' had been replaced by the new monterrico racing tracks ; along the avenue some old homes remain (as my own) but there is also an interesting choice of restaurants and cafeterias; 'real plaza salaverry' mall is on block 23

The remains of the 'equestrian promenade' of Lima
aug 2016 • Priatelia
When the old viceroyal 'city of the kings' now called 'Lima' saw its walls attacked by plague, tbc and cholera, its most lucky sons moved to healthier new areas built in bricks and concrete and not anymore in adobe and quincha. Salaverry avenue was the aristocratic avenue of Lima, its most wealthy and socially prominent (as only wealth doesn't count in Perú) members will build their homes and move to it, some to mansions and some to smaller homes. Most were fond of horses and horse riding as the Horse Tracks (hipodromo) was blocks away (where today San Felipe social housing is), and the Polo Club and the Hipico (equestrian club). Many homes had stables and their owners will enjoy a ride each morning. That is why Salaverry Avenue has a wide central area, it is an 'equestrian promenade', a path to ride, go round by the sea where it ends, and go back home for a shower and breakfast. This was until the late 60's when a military coup d'etat brought reforms that forever changed the millenary peruvian vertical society.

Pleasant tree lined avenue with shops and restaurants on both sides
aug 2016
Runs thru Jesus Maria/San Isidro districts. Lots of shopping on both sides of the street and is a pleasant area to walk around. Can be terribly crowded during rush hour as there are many private houses off the avenue. If you stay Ani length of time in Lima you'll be on it various times.
