- travel_in_foursEmirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates911 contributionsGood visitA medieval town in Tuscany. We reached at this place pretty later part of the day. We were glad that we could catch the sunset and grab a coffee. After spending few hours strolling in the town, we had dinner at a nice restaurant RISTORANTE DA REMO however I would suggest to reach bit earlier and enjoy the beauty of this town. You can also climb the wall of this castle which I am sure will provide breathtaking views. Since we were late the access was closed.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2023
- clivecSurrey202 contributionsVery picturesque but not worth paying to walk the wallsLovely hill top town. Arrived mid morning and so we could park in the upper car park otherwise it was a long uphill walk. The town is very medieval and lots of character. Nice little shops to visit and when we visited it was easy to get a table in the main square to watch the world go by. The village is completely enclosed by walls and you can pay to go up. However I wouldn’t recommend as when you think of cities with medieval walls you think York or Chester with extensive walls. In Monteriggioni they have just opened two small sections of the wall less than 150m in total. So would avoid paying for the walls and just view them. Probably one of the more picturesque Tuscan villages.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2023

- Deborah L21 contributionsWorth the extra to walk the wallsWe really enjoyed ourselves on this visit. Unlike other reviewers it was worth the 5 euros to walk the walls. This also gave you entry to the museum. Whilst this was not extensive, it was fun to dress up in the gear provided. The views from the walls were sublime. A nice way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy dayVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023

Nice little fort overlooking the Siena valley towards Florence. We found a tasting room and shipped some wine home. The views from the wall were amazing.

Hill top walled village has bars and restaurants as well as gift shops. Worth an hour or two to wander around and maybe enjoy something to eat and drink.

One of those "must dos" of Tuscany and you won't be disappointed. We didn't feel the need to pay for the wall walk as the town itself affords great views. Just stroll and soak up the atmosphere of this exquisite little town, with a range of excellent cafes and restaurants

We got there too early to walk the walls (from 9.30am) but it was still lovely to see the old buildings.

Monteriggioni is a great little Castle, close to the Firenze-Siena autostrada. It sits on a hill that made it the perfect outpost in the long-standing conflicts between Siena and Florence, and also served as a way station and stopping point along the Via Francigena, the pilgrimage route from the north down to Rome.
There is a quaint small village nestled within well-preserved castle walls with 11 guard towers. Very picturesque. The village has a few characteristic Tuscan restaurants, a hotel, some airbnbs, tourist shops, and of course (for a fee) you can walk along the castle walls.
Its perfect for stopping for an hour or so in between other sites. Easy to get to and to park, and just a short climb up the hill. Certainly worth seeing at least once.

Hola,

Hello, I'm planning a trip to Italy soon and am very excited to visit Monteriggioni. I will be staying in Florence but taking a train to Castellina Scalo to visit Monteriggioni. Is it possible to walk from the train station to the village or is it necessary to buy a bus ticket or taxi? I'm certainly physically able and would prefer to walk, but I want to make sure there are places to walk so we don't walk on the wrong road and annoy people driving! Any help or advice is very appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Sara,I live in Monteriggioni,so I know very well the road. You can walk because there is a road that it ends in the middle of Monteriggioni.
