In front of the Temple of Concordia, you can admire the statue of Icarus, donated by the Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj. The statue represents the Fall of Icarus, who disobeyed his father Daedalus, he flew too close to the sun, burned his wings of wax and fell into the Mediterranean. in this statue, as a result of the fall, the wings are broken. This is a modern piece of art but it nevertheless is superbly executed and fits in perfectly with its surroundings. It reminded me of that classic film Jason and the Argonauts and the mighty Talos!

The most intact temple in the Valley of Temples. The whole valley is not to be missed, it rivals the Acropolis in Athens. Bus #2/ takes you to the entrance from Agrigento.

I was distracted when the tour guide explained this. I regret it. I think it deserves more attention than I gave it.

People can critique how accurately this statue portrays the legendary figure, but what struck us was how natural this modern piece of art looks in this setting.

Huge and impressive statue with all anatomical details. Looks quite organic to this place, even though it is a piece of modern art.

The first "discrepancy" between Icarus' statue and the story of Daedalus’ and Icarus’ escape from Crete was "The sculpted figure." Icarus was, according to the story / legend, a hasty young boy while the sculpted figure we are watching is of a grown man and as a soldier or warrior looks. The second discrepancy and the main reason for the legend mismatch is that Icarus was getting very close to the sun contrary to Daedalus's instructions, causing the beeswax that sticks the feathers to the wings that Daedalus’ built to soften and the wings to fall apart, causing Icarus to fall and die. Whoever is looking at the statue, everyone will see that it features a pair of wings on Icarus' back. How is that possible ???

It is pointless to search for a connection between the plot of the famous ancient Greek myth of Icarus and Agrigento. It is missing. Similarly, there is no deep meaning why is Icarus without legs? The answer is one. Because the author is a Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj. He lived in Italy for a long time and his sculptures are more numerous here than in his native Poland. In 3 days, we met him twice in Agrigento and near the Pisa train station, where a similar man with severed limbs is lying. Mitoraj`s sculptures always lacking something. There may not be legs, arms, or the back of the head. And there can only be legs. Here in Agrigento, Icarus is missing his feet. Mitoraj left the main body - bronze penis. There is something to hold on to when taking a photo. It is necessary to observe safety precautions. The hot Sicilian sun heats the penis, too. You can get a burn and traces of acquaintance with the work of Igor Mitoraj will remind you of themselves for a long time.

While you are in the Valle to see the historic sites, this is an interesting juxtaposition of old and modern that you can't help but experiment with photographically. If you do so you can appreciate this type of sculpture more so than if you just take the obligatory selfie.
