Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There are many churches dedicated to Purgatory in southern Italy. They are found in Matera, Naples, Cefalu, Marsala,Trapani, Ragusa, Castelvetrano etc. This is no accident. New Baroque churches were built in the XVII-XVIII centuries-the time of the exhausting war of the Catholic Church for the souls of parishioners. First with Protestants, and then with atheists. The whip was intimidation, including posthumous punishment in purgatory, and the carrot was the Baroque aesthetic. Built in the second half of the XVIII century, San Lorenzo impresses with its Baroque luxury. The double staircase (symbolically?) leads to purgatory. At the entrance, you are greeted on pillars by allegorical sculptures of Faith and Mercy on the sides. The bell tower enhances the facade's asymmetry. Inside, the Church consists of a nave and four side chapels. In one of them, a canvas depicting St. Lawrence, who is known to have been roasted alive on a grill, which raised his rating to an extraordinary height in the eyes of Catholics. Baroque, as you know, edifying and educational charge are sculptures that symbolize the values of a good Catholic. These statues, made by Giuseppe and Giacomo Serpotta, symbolize Love, Simplicity, Charity, Prudence, Justice, Religion (where without it?), Strength, Meekness. The task of producing a wow effect lies in the crucifixion chapel, covered in gold. This is the work of the sculptor Pietro Carletto. However, now Italy is not a very religious country. According to a recent report by the Pew research center, Italy is exactly in the middle (13th place) among 25 European countries in terms of religion, missing out on the number of believers and Observants in all of Eastern Europe (except Russia) and Portugal with Greece.. So you don't need many churches, they are already empty. Purgatorio is now a community center for exhibitions, seminars, and more. Well, for this activity, the above-mentioned virtues will also not be superfluous, well, except for religion and meekness...

While this was a nice church to visit, it wasn't our favorite in Agrigento. However I always like to see the churches to compare them. The exterior is definitely pretty

It won't take too long to look around this church but it's worth stopping to see. Situated on a nice little square. Staff inside were very friendly and advised what else we should make sure to see in the town.

Just a church, nothing so special there. Situated in Agrigento, around this place there is a lot of garbage.

Association Arte&Fede rents the e-bikes in this church. They seem very good option, as the city has a lot of hills and electric help is necessary. They are also not pricy, like 20 euro per day. BUT. They are not insured. So if some one steals the bike you rent, you have to pay 400 euro. This is what happened to us.

The walking tour of old Agrigento is basically a tour of churches of which this is one. Really it is nothing special, and once you have seen one church who wants to see another nine?

The church is adjacent to the main road through the old part of Agrigento and easily reached on foot. A flight of stairs leads up to the entrance. The church has a nice interior with white sculptures. One can enjoy a drink or an ice cream in the square in front of the church and adore the façade.

The church was closed, but I have never previously heard of calling a church after purgatory before. It is a shame not to have seen inside

Beautiful sculpting and artwork - spoiled somewhat by the are exhibits on the side walls which does fit with the flavor of the church.

Church of Purgatory depicts St Lawrence saving souls. Inside a magnificent ceiling, gold crucifix and confessional stalls/boxes one for women, another for men. Have not seen this before and was told there are some in the Vatican. Serpotta statues of the virtues recognisable and beautiful statue representation of the Virgin Mary by Gagini. We had a guide who described what we were looking at in English and this was excellent, adding to our enjoyment.
