Great Coastal Walk With Stunning Views
okt 2020
Stunning Views. A bit scary in places if you are not keen on heights but worth it for the views. The ferry trip across the bay was a nice experience.

We were looking forward to having lunch at the Gara Rock Hotel but found the restaurant manager very unwelcoming so we didn't bother.

Fantastic views, quite small path on coast part
aug 2020 • Rodinné
After taking the ferry taxi to east Portlemouth, the map was pretty easy to follow. Just one part when you should turn upwards rather than end up in one of the secluded bays is the only part which could be made easier to read. Then you walk up to the higher parts, overlooking the sea, brilliant views, path quite tight and do feel quite precarious in parts. Follow the walk to gara rock and the hotel for a drink and food. Lovely easy walk back inland via a path through backs of fields all the way to sunny Bay, I think. Says moderate, I'd say strenuous, but I am rotund!! Enjoy

Wonderful walk
jan 2020
A stunning coastal walk to Gara Rock, wonderful in the winter sunshine even with stormy seas. Gara Rock is a great place to rest, have a drink or some food and soak in the amazing wild, coastal views.

Beautiful Scenery, But Don't Go If You Don't Like Heights and Sheer Drops
dec 2019 • Rodinné
I read a review another lady had put on here. She was so right. The walk starts off through woods with wonderful views of Salcombe and the beaches below. But then after the memorial to the lifeboat men the path becomes narrow with sheer drops. I have to say I was frightened as I don't like heights or sheer drops. My legs turned to jelly and I got vertigo, I couldn't look at the view, I just couldn't wait for us to be away from the edge. I was with my daughter who doesn't mind heights and she had to help me up rocks and around bends that were very close to the edge. I was so pleased to see The Gara Rock Hotel and to be safe.
If you don't mind heights and sheer drops you will love this walk as it really is beautiful.

Perfect break away!
nov 2019 • Páry
We booked a loft room for 2 nights after seeing an offer on secret escapes- the pictures of the room are what sold it to me and we were not disappointed!
We had a spacious loft room with balcony looking out to sea. The decor is beautiful, attention to detail is spot on.
We felt very welcomed as soon as we arrived and the lounge area is also furnished beautifully.
The food and drinks are certainly not cheap but the meals we had here were amazing!
Staff are extremely friendly but without overly fussing which is nice, we felt extremely relaxed here.
You just need to be a little patient when ordering drinks etc in the lounge area as they do seem to take a while... although this didn’t bother us at all.
Views from restaurant are breathtaking.
Bare in mind that you are literally in the middle of nowhere and that you are really restricted to the hotel in the evenings which again we didn’t mind.
The only negative was that we stupidly relied on our sat nav to get us here on our arrival and it took us on the most narrow, bending, pot holed and overgrown roads we have ever been on- we had to reverse our car several times to let cars pass us...hubby was super stressed out after the drive when we first arrived argh lol!...AVOID SOUTH POOL ROUTE and head for the route that takes you via STOCKENHAM.
Oh yes we would also definitely recommend having a spa treatment- we both had massages, I had an amazing hot stones & other half had a deep tissue massage. I am rubbish with names argh but both the therapists were brilliant and very friendly.
It is dog friendly here too which is really lovely, we left ours at home this time but wished we had brought her!
Highly recommend if you literally want to get away from it all, we saw more staff here than we ever saw guests, really laid back and peaceful!

A great way to experience the South West coastal path when in Salcombe.
aug 2019
Fun start by taking the ferry from outside the Ferry Inn across the estuary, then turning right, walking to Mill Bay and taking the coastal path. The path starts through the woods with several lovely views of the beaches, the clear water and back up the estuary. The path then opens up and the views are amazing. Stop at the tribute to the lifeboat men and sit on the bench for a well deserved rest and to take in the stunning view.

Two options from here, up and over, or taking the lower path to stick close to the coast - we took this and were rewarded with some good hiking.

Eventually the beach at Gara Rock comes into view as a great target to reach. Climb back up to the hotel and walk up the lane to pick up the footpath back down to Mill Bay through the National Trust woods and some well deserved time on one of the beaches.

Amazing Walk
aug 2019 • Rodinné
We walked into Salcombe and took the ferry over to the other side. From there we took the coastal path walk to Gara Rock and had lunch there (see separate review) we walked back and then over the ferry to conclude our day. The weather was hot and definitely take water and sun hats as easy to forget quite how far the hotel is from the ferry.

Beautiful walk to Gara Rock but choose your path carefully!
jún 2019 • Páry
We took the little ferry across from Salcombe. Lovely crossing, and walked along the narrow road to Mill Bay, This is truly a lovely beach suitable for families, dogs allowed on leads. The views across the estuary are beautiful. There are some public toilets which are terrible and very dark!
We aimed to reach Gara Rock, about 2 miles away. The first part of the walk was good, shaded with some lovely views albeit a steep inclined path with very uneven ground ( roots etc) .
The views became better once out in the open. The path was fine until the little monument to the life boat victims. Then we made the mistake of choosing the bottom path. Whilst the views are beautiful, this can be tricky with sometimes having to climb over rocks leaning towards the cliff very close to the edge. The path is not only uneven in places but sometimes there is nowhere else to go but balance over rocks to carry on with drop on one side and thick prickly gorse on the other. I could not tell you about the views then as getting concerned about safety, we decided to escape up a near vertical field to the other path above.. I would not recommend this with children or if not very mobile with good balance and if you do not like heights. I think that it is better to try the top path at the monument which will be less close to the edge.
We finally made it to the Gara Rock hotel with great views and had Sunday lunch. Would recommend, very tasty, great staff, lovely hotel and views.
We went back the easy way,, past the hotel, through the side of fields into a lovely , safe wooded walk which took us back through the NT car park at Mill Bay. No sea views but only 1 mile approx and safe. It would have been great to have had warning signs at the life boat Memorial stating the difficulties of the lower path before we got there!
Still worth it though but next time, we are taking the top path!!

Great walk
jún 2019 • Páry
We actually started the walk from Mill Bay and then after getting to Gara Rock , which we nearly missed, we came back via East Portlemouth before descending to get the ferry to Salcombe. Beautiful walk.

A lovely walk
jún 2019 • Páry
Well worth getting the ferry across (from the ferry inn) if the weather is nice - 2 1/4 mile walk along the cliffs (bit steep in parts but very manageable if moderately fit) rewarded by lovely lunch at the Gara Rock hotel/restaurant followed by a nice 1 1/4 mile (downhill) trip back to the ferry.
