About

    Medieval art
The cost is now 10 euros per person, and 5 euros for an audio guide. Bags must be left in lockers, photos permitted. Extensive collection of medieval art and lots of information in both Italian and English as you progress throughout the museum. Highlights the life and work of Perugino well. A great way to avoid an Italian heatwave
Visiting Italy this summer in the middle of a heatwave, I am getting so many emails asking if I am OK from friends. But I am more than OK because I am spending the middle of each day in wonderful cultural locations and this one was particularly amazing. The works of art are beautifully presented and though they are almost all religious, even if you just have an hour, you will find some real stunners - highlights for me were of course the Piero della Francesca altarpiece with its early night time scene of Saint Francis, the gorgeous Fra Angelico Madonna with vases of roses in front of her, the Peruginos, the Signorelli and the Piero di Cosimo. I also loved the beautiful painting of Saint Cecilia by Orazio Gentileschi and the sculptures by Bernini. Some rooms still bear their original frescoes and videos supply fascinating information about some of the exhibits. I ended up staying four hours so well worth the entrance fee. Just beware that the lift does not work very well and we ended up having to walk up the staircase but it is designed for a horse to climb so not too taxing.

    A national treasure
I'm an art lover. I love Florence. I enjoy wandering into random art museums in small towns in Italy and seeing what they have. And I remember worldwide cities based on how impressive their art museums are. The Galleria Nazionale is a national treasure. It is one of the finest art museums in Italy and shouldn't be missed. Especially if you enjoy religious art.

This is a beautiful gallery. We spent nearly three hours there having gone in the early morning ( no crowds!)
The current special exhibition of the works of the most celebrated local renaissance sartist known as Perugino. His work is stupendous and works have been assembled from galleries all over the world. Raphael was his pupil. The permanent collection is equally interesting and elegantly displayed. Well worth the 12€ entrance fee.

We loved the design and layout of the newly refurbished museum. The exhibits are exquisite and the descriptions very helpful in seeing the development of art through the late medieval to the Renaissance. Their exhibits peter out after 1600 so the last few rooms are unnecessary, but the richness of most of the rooms are truly wonderful. I didn’t think it was expensive. The window seats are special.

Tripadvisor keeps tagging this museum as "Closed until further notice" but it is indeed open and we visited during July 2022. The museum straddles buildings that were connected over the centuries so in certain places the frescoes on exhibit are actually original parts of the buildings themselves and quite significant from an art history angle. As the name suggests, this museum is about Umbrian art and the greatest impact that Umbria has had on Western art is its contribution to the pivot from Medieval to Renaissance art, so that represents about 2/3 of the collection. The rest is Baroque to Neo-Classical and some contemporary art from living Umbrian artists. If you like Duccio, Gentile da Fabriano, Fra Angelico, Piero della Francesca, this place is for you. It is not going to be your cup of tea if you are looking for a more universal serving of art, but apart from that, it is rare to see so many defining Umbrian artists of that epoch under one roof and the curators have set out the collection so that the evolution of art across time from one room to the other is clear as is the contribution by each successive generation of artists.

Recently renovated, the museum in Perugia has become a genuine pearl. Even if you are not interested in Italian art from 1250 to 1600, the museum is well worth a visit just for the interior architecture and new design of the exhibition rooms. Great sense of history, simplicity and estetics. Only a modest number of paintings are on exhibition, giving ample space for those on show to really shine. No sense of rushing to the next to make sure you cover all. The paintings are not surprisingly not at the same quality level as the paintings Uffici in Firenze, but especially the collection of early paintings is really worth spending an hoour seeing,

However, this is a narrow presentation of religious paintings from the Medieval period. I particularly like this period but the exhibit was homogeneous. Also expensive. Can't recommend.

I should have read the reviews for this museum before going as I was so impressed with the building itself I jumped at the chance to get inside. If you’re a fan of religious Renaissance Art you’re in for a real treat here. If not, I’d skip it and enjoy the building from its exterior and the free main level. There are a few rooms/galleries that still retain frescoes from the original construction as well as an interesting clock tower room. Although I had no interest in the exhibit, I must say that it was probably the most comprehensive collection of religious art I’ve seen anywhere.

This museum has literally rooms and rooms of madonnas and not much else. I was faintly interested by how many wretchedly unattractive madonnas were painted in the 1200s...then there’s a weird little stage when the angels turn into heads with wings. It’s like a morgue for Christianity.
