Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a huge complex (monastery), unfortunately you can only enter part of the gardens. The church is closed to visitors, as is the monastery itself.

The church didn't seem to be open when we visited, but we had a little peek at the cloisters and the garden, which were beautiful, well-kept, and very peaceful. Worth seeing if you're in this part of town.

The Franciscan church attached to the friary is no longer in use for Christian worship. Instead it has been restored as a visitor attraction. A marvellous achievement by the restorers, and a tribute to the energy and vision of Lucca’s city council. Yet it was poignant to see a great Franciscan friary become a museum. In the locality there were a great many doorways with IHS emblems which reflect the tremendous influence of the friars in former times.

The huge complex of the church and monastery of the Franciscan order was built in the Gothic style during the 14th century and completed with additional chapels in the next century. It is a peaceful place, near the parking garage, recently restored and nowadays is often used as a venue for concerts and cultural gatherings.

Walked by this church several times on the way to the parking garage. It is located right in the piazza and in back of the garage. It seems to be only open at certain hours. It is unassuming from the outside and looks small but when you enter it is rather large. It is your typical Franciscan non-assuming church. Also there is no fee to walk in.

We entered Lucca from the Mancini gate and parked underground below this convent (without knowing it). When we started walking into Lucca, our first site in town was this beautiful church! We enjoyed a very pleasant walk through the church, admiring its art and carvings.

We stumbled across this little gem. Actually, it's not little. The grounds are very expansive and well kept. A nice quiet place to take a walk. The main building is beautifully restored.

Free admission although a little out of the way but Lucca is small, so you can get anywhere. Simple cloisters. Church has the usual interior. Brick tower outside was attractive.

Restored and reopened in 2014, the maze of courtyards prompts for inner peace and harmony. Surrounding buildings accomodate IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, a graduate school founded in 2004. The church of San Francesco since its reopening has become an important cultural center with free lectures, talks, film projections and concerts. For example, just in September 2016 I had a chance to attend the concert performance of Puccini's ''Tosca'' and ''Choirs in Concert''. The church also contains the tomb of famous Lucchesian composer Luigi Boccherini (on the left-hand side from the entrance).

I concur completely with the observations of Bruno66 below. This was an important early Franciscan site, and one heavily supported by a number of rich Lucca families. Much of the interior finery of the church has been taken away, but the architecture remains. A walk through the cloisters shows also how modern Luchese tastefully repurpose old buildings--in this case into educational facilities; to see more of this, drop into San Ponziano, where a whole standalone set of library stacks were tastefully placed in this once important Lucca church.
