Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Terrible monument. It made me cry. I can understand that it made sense at the time for the artist, as found in Wikipedia, it was made to celebrate the win of Ferdinand I of Tuscany over the Ottomans. But, in 2023, to be marketed as the most famous monument in Livorno, I consider it a shame. It should be torn down, is my humble opinion.

This is really a statue in honor of Ferdinand de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who founded Livorno as the main port for the duchy of Tuscany. To entice people to move and set up business in Livorno the Grand Duke granted the residents freedom of religion. It became a haven for Spanish Jews and other persecuted foreigners.

The common name of the statue refers to the four Moor slaves in chains at the base.
Statue overlooks the inner harbor where the coast guard docks its ships..

A statue, is a statue, Take it or leave it for what they represent, and its up to each individual to form their own opinion, and make a judgement. History , is history, it cant be changed. What has happened, has happened..We should not glorify it, but educate. That is all..

Only was able to see this monument from the tour bus....but our guide told us of it's significance to Livorno history.

I lived in Livorno from 2007 to 2012. Initially, my ex would avoid this statue, fearing that I'd be offended. Nonetheless, during a walk, I found it. All of my life, I was perplexed about stories of the moors being White or Black. In statue, I found the faces of both, although when you see it, people conveniently avoid the black ones face, on photos. It's a beautiful statue. It's eerie and could look as if it is representative of White supremacy, but if you know the history, it depicts Duke Ferdinand conquering the Moorish invaders. As prisoners, they rebuilt Livorno after the flood, were set free and given citizenship. And now, you see their faces in the faces of the citizenry. This monument has nothing to do with slavery and I wish people would stop impinging their own historical narrative and insecurities on this beautiful Italian monument. Viva Italia! Viva Mori!

I was shocked when I came upon this statue while in Livorno. Its racist depiction is hurtful and shocking. It glorifies slavery and is extremely offensive. I hope that it can be taken down, to show that Livorno does not support this ideology. History can be taught without glorification of violence/oppression against people of colour.

This magnificent and, to be honest, rather shocking at first site monument stands in front of the port of Livorno. The bronze statues of the Mori are so detailed they efface the marble statue of Fernando I, who is actually the winner in the battle.
I spend a lot of time there, just circling around the monument looking at the details. Go and find something yourself.

I love the street art that many cities have and I wish we had more at home. It is a shame little new art is added anymore.

The one thing you notice when coming to an Italian city and Livorno is the same, is that they love there statues and there history and as I said as my heading it’s very interesting knowing the history of the Italian people.
Right now to business the shops are very nice if a little expensive most are designer clothing shops and as for the market WOW is the only word you can say because it has every kind of food you can ever ask for.
Now for the but... it’s a shipping port where big cruise ships dock so how about making the port a little bit cleaner and how about even a couple of souvenir shops so people would stop and shop in the city instead of going to Pisa or Florence.
Enough said.

An interesting monument that celebrates the overcoming of criminal influences in the form of pirates? A monument that celebrates the dominance over other cultures? A monument that could relate to slavery?
