I loved this church. It’s in a great spot being right on the water in a beautiful little town. It’s free to go in and walk around and it’s small. A true highlight of my trip.

Precious old-school church. Not ornate, but delightfully simple and rugged. Good quiet/reflection time. "Simple" can be beautiful... And 'real' votive candles...

Nice gothic church in Vernazza. It is located on the right side the main piazza in front of the water. It is dedicated to the town patron saint Santa Margherita d'Antiochia.

This 14th century Gothic church is the main historical sight in Vernazza.
You can’t miss it. It is located on a rocky platform right beside the colourful harbour and every Vernazza tourist ends up beside the water. In any case, the creamy coloured, octagonal tower is 40 metres tall and dominates the town’s skyline. Its the first thing you see if you walk into Vernazza from Monterosso.
The entrance beside the marina is not the main entrance but it’s the one almost everyone uses (be wary of anyone asking for an entrance fee outside the church. When we were there recently, a man positioned himself by the front door and appeared to be collecting en entrance fee but it was actually a scam).
Inside the church is dimly lit and gloomy, with solid, undressed stone pillars and exposed stonework on the walls.
If, like us, you’ve hiked into Vernazza, then the church is a cool, dark sanctuary after several hours in the sun.
There is very little decoration. The white marble of the high altar stands out and a large 17th century wooden crucifix dominates the left wall. It was created by Anton Maria Maragliano, a poor Genoese artisan who became so renowned for his realistically painted wooden crucifixes and religious statues that he was sought out by the King of Spain and produced designs for the sterns of the Spanish king’s ships.
There is a good story attached to the church. Legend has it that locals were inspired to build the church after a series of strange appearances of a box of bones. A small wooden box was found along the coast and when opened, it contained the bones of Santa Margherita's hand. It’s unclear how anyone could tell that the bones belonged to the saint and weren't just a bunch of random fingers but in any case, it caused a lot of excitement - so much excitement that they rushed around and built a church to honour the saint. They must have been devastated then when a violent storm not only destroyed the church but washed away the relic. However this was not the end of the story and just a short time later, the bones reappeared, washed up in exactly the spot where they were first found. Fired up by this new miracle, the townspeople built a new church, the one we see here today.

It is certainly one of the gems of Vernazza.
It is a catholic church built in the 11th century with access from a secondary entrance, located to the side of the apse, directly from the small square overlooking the marina.
The simplicity of the interior strikes and contrasts with the Baroque façade: its exposed stone walls have nothing pompous and superfluous, and invite to prayer and meditation.
Only very few decorations, among which noteworthy is a large wooden crucifix attributed to the Genoese sculptor Anton Maria Maragliano, adorn the little church.
Small but beautiful and very impressive.
From inside it is possible to see the small port and hear the roar of the waves.
If you visit Vernazza, you cannot miss this beautiful church.

Santa Margheritte de Antiochia is the main church located in the old harbour of Vernazza, a tiny town in Cinque Terre National Park, in the North of Italy. The church is very nice and the inner part is so beautiful, also it is totally integrated in the old harbour, the most beautiful place in the town.

stopped in to see this cathedral as we were walking around Vernazza. A very beautiful old church. Sat and enjoyed to solitude as the crowds were low.

This is a nice, small Catholic church near the water in Vernazza. You really can't miss it as it has a most impressive domed clock tower. Inside, the wooden benches give the church a nice feel. The organ is newer and a little modern, but also nice. The rock walls here, especially around the alter, are just too cool and it gives an ancient feel to this lovely church. It's not real big, but the tall windows, high wooden ceiling and the marvelous columns make for some amazing views. Well worth a visit, especially inside!

The church is very pretty with brick columns and walls. There are some statues, carvings, and paintings. But the most interesting part of the church is all the stone/brick work with contrasting colors. Definitely worth a look inside.
