Neighbourhood: Bastille / Oberkampf
Bastille and Oberkampf are lively parts of town made for entertainment. During the day rows of unassuming bars welcome customers for a bite or a drink, but it’s at night this area really comes to life. Students and young professionals fill the busy bars around Bastille and Oberkampf. At Place de la Bastille, crowds flock to the Opéra Bastille in the evening and groups wait for coveted tickets during the day. Towards Republique, skateboarders practice their tricks while others chill out at the square. If you’re looking for late-night revelry, this is your neighbourhood.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Limited variety but desserts are not so bad at all. However coffee is not good and may be disappointing for coffee lovers

A flight from daily life, or into the future. We went to see an imaginative exhibition with many surprises. Go while you still can as Maison Rouge is about to close end of this month (October). Video, photos, installations, sculptures all centered around the theme “Vol”, which i would translate as a flight of fancy - and i mean that in the most positive way..

La Maison rouge has been exhibiting private collections and the artwork of cutting edge artists since the beginning of the 21st century. In May 2018 I had gone to see an exhibition, Deborah Neff collection of 200 black dolls dating from 1840 to 1940, and discovered the Rom artist Ceija Stojka who survived 3 concentration camps and was reunited with part of her family in Vienna after the war. She started writing and painting her recollections after age 55. Karin Berger’s documentary was most moving.
Both exhibitions were poignant in showcasing the blatant racism of their time.

Amazing artists shown. The space could be a bit more sleek, the art showcased a bit better. Apart trom that, just a fabulous (new?) art organization in Paris. Yay.

We toured this museum one Sunday afternoon during our trip to Paris. It is a great facility with a wide range of artwork from artists around the world who are predominantly self-taught. The installations were fantastic and the facility was quite nice. There were films of the artists playing in a theater room which were very informative.

Wasn't mentioned in tourist lists but was in my lonely planet. Great find and an original presentation of exhibits with computer terminals providing information on them. Cafe has nice friendly ambience.

In first time when we arrived in places i was disapointed with the outside of the house because i expected to see a red one. But after when we go into the place it was fine because they haven't many controls like in the Louvre I had the impression to be free. I liked this exibition because we had a good guide who is a nice person and who seems very implicated, knowing about what she's talking about. Not only because she learned about that, but because she had an exprerience on the city concerned. So I recommend thks event because it's about modern art with diversity, and we can identify in some points of the society of Johannesburg not like the art of Midle Ages or 18th century wich is to far from our generation.

At the moment the contemporary art exhibition which can be found in "La Maison Rouge" in Paris is called "My Joburg".
The atmosphere was very calm, as everyone is looking at the photographs and the art works. I really liked the exhibiton as it was a great way to explore the city of Johannesburg. Through all of the artists we were able to see all of the aspects of the city. Moreover our guide Merilyn was herself South African and currently lives in Johannesburg, and she was very happy to talk about Joburg.
I would really recommend "La Maison Rouge" as the exhibitions are truly interesting and the art was really diversified.

If you wanna see unique South African art, if you wanna see the true face of South Africa and it's populations connection with art, then "Maison Rouge" is the place for you. I recommend "Maison rouge" to those who are fond of South African art, but not just traditional art but also modern or urban art. This gallerie Shows a different view of South Africa and Johannesburg, it shows us the reality of the life of black poeple in Sout Africa, it's a contrast between the reality and the prejudices of Joburg. The atmosphere was very peacefull, the guide was very instructive, the fact that the guid spoke in english with me and my camarades was very instructive and helpfull for french students who have some problems with the english language. In this gallerie we can find different kind of art, paitings, drawings, books, statues, and all diffferent kind of stuff. You will see things that you've never seen in you life before. This gallerie will suprise you, shock you, and open your eyes in front of a different view of South Africa.
