Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have walked through the streets of this 18e area many, many times and spent several days over the years lodging here. It is often mischaracterized due it's immediate proximity to Montmartre as part of charming Montmartre. It certainly is not! This is an area with a heavy immigrant population where a few wrong turns can put you in a sketchy neighborhood. Lot of idle dudes hanging out on the sidewalk giving you eyeballs. Yes, there are interesting things here for an experienced traveler. You're right in the center of a thriving multi-ethnic environment. There are some very interesting markets and ethic restaurants. And of course, a short walk to trendy (and much more expensive) Montmartre. It's also very proximate to Gare du Nord and a number of metro stations. There's a lot of it I wouldn't walk in alone after dark however. I'm usually careful with my mobile phone and wallet security in Europe generally, but here I'm fully on guard. I would never walk this area with all my credit cards in my pants pocket wallet.

This neighborhood has long been an area for newcomers and continues to be. Now the residents are mostly African and they bring all of their culture with them, so come to explore the shops and the food.

if you are looking this page in 2019, PLEASE, please DO NOT GO to this neighborhood. It is SUPER insecure, thieves everywhere and drug dealers. One of the worst places in Paris

Most of the residents are immigrants or second-generation. People from many lands live here and have brought their cultures with them, so some interesting food markets and shops. Good street vibes. Architecture not so interesting as many of the new building have no special touches. Worth a visit.

Paris has always been an immigrant city, and in this neighborhood you will see modern immigration including lots of interesting shops and food stalls. See something different. Very safe.

I'd been to Paris many years ago and I really did not like it. Fast forward 12 years and my aunt and visited and while it is congested and overpopulated, this time around was awesome. I booked us a Black Paris Tour and after reading about Goutte D'or ( Little Africa) we spent the day there and it was wonderful. If you love immersing yourself in different cultures and want to explore an area or district that most african americans don't know exists, visit. We were able to have dresses and skirts made beautifully by a talented and creative Nigerian Tailor. Boyo was pleasant, accommodating and an all around good person. My aunt and I also purchased fabric and he's designing and making us additional outfits and will send them. The 18th district is quite diverse within the African community. There are several fabric shops and open air markets. The vibe is eclectic and lively. Must do!!!

The easiest way to arrive to "la Goutte d'Or" (the golden drop) is by underground. Arriving you would experience how the city if hosting different people and you will be prepared to the outside world. The inhabitants of the neighbourhood come largely from Mediterranean, African and Asian countries, so that you would be pleased to drink a coffee in a bistrot together with an old man wearing a "boubou" or to buy a telephone in a shop in which several language are used. Not the best place for Marie Le Pen or her friends, but a nice place to visit and to stay, with different smells, different foods, different musics and different people. Just 3 km from Notre Dame (and the percourse from Notre Dame to La Goutte d'Or is really pleasant!)

If you are looking for a different experience in Paris, visit the multicultural neighborhood of Goutte D'Or in the 18th arrondissement, down the hill from Sacre Coeur. (Metro: Barbes-Rochechouart.) There is a large colorful market on Barbes most days and the neighborhood hosts a large outdoor festival the first week of July. You can find a $5 t-shirt or a $200 mohair designer sweater in this area. The first would be found at Tati, France's most popular discount department store. The second at Marcia de Carvalho's boutique, one of 14 up-and-coming designers with shops on rue des Gardes, aka "rue de la Mode." If shopping makes you hungry, stop at one of the restaurants specializing the cuisine of Cameroon, Senegal, Zaire, and other African countries. One precaution, it is best to visit during the day.
