Iconic Location - in two halves!
apr 2021
We had actually decided to visit Waterlow Park next door, but saw the opportunity to visit the (in)famous cemetery on the same day. Be aware that the cemetery is in two parts - and it is cheaper to buy tickets to both at the same time. We didn't - so we hope to return to see the west side sometime (which usually needs to be booked, unlike the East side). The East side is where Karl Marx is buried, along with miscellaneous socialists, communists and revolutionaries nearby. However, there are also many other famous and not so famous people, from Jeremy Beadle to William Friese Greene (the inventor of kinematography). There are also some Commonwealth War Graves.

The variation of memorials is interesting in itself. Some give just a name and some dates, others going into greater detail, realising that this is the only chance many people will have in connecting with the deceased. Some are poignant.

Unlike council-operated cemeteries, Highgate is run by a charitable trust. The original London Cemetery Company set up the West Cemetery (17 acres) first, in 1839. It expanded to the East Cemetery (19 acres) in 1860. It went bust in the 20th Century.

A helpful map with routes and notable graves is included in the price.

Interesting place
aug 2020
A friend of mine brought me and my sister here while we were staying with her in London. It’s a beautiful cemetery to visit if you’d like to see some place different to the usual tourist attractions. There’s a great amount of history here too, many famous people are buried here. Would love to visit again sometime in the future if I’m ever back in London, hopefully for a little longer next time!

Well worth a visit!
feb 2021 • Páry
We were pleasantly surprised to see Highgate Cemetery is open at the moment. Although there are no guided tours, we went on a self-guided tour through both the East and West sides of the cemetery ourselves. It is a beautiful walk with such nice architecture and a peaceful haven away from the metropolis! We especially liked looking at the catacombs on the West side of the cemetery. Really interesting place. We'd highly recommend a visit! Shout out to the staff who were really friendly and offered us guidance - thanks!

Iconic London walk - book online in advance
jan 2021 • Rodinné
We had never been to Highgate Cemetery before but had always made vague plans to go there. There are self-guides tours now because of the pandemic and that swung it for us on New Year’s Day. We booked online (I think you have to) for the West Cemetery, which means you get the East Cemetery (Marx) free. You can park right outside, and if that area is full, some of the permitted parking in the area only runs from 10-12 Monday to Friday. Lots of single yellow lines if you want to go on a Sunday too. (Public transport would be to Highgate Village and walk down Swains Lane.) Great and helpful volunteers, plus informative free map and really useful signposting make it a very easy place to navigate, although you often feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. Highlights include Egyptian Avenue, which feels like something straight out of Hammer House of Horror. Highly recommended.

Lovely review - thanks. Just a note to say that parking immediately outside is for grave owners and disabled visitors, but parking on Swains Lane is easy on most days. Nearest tube is Archway (then bus - or a brisk steep walk - up to Waterlow Park).

Not worth the money
dec 2020
The final resting place for Karl Marx - founder of socialism... £4.50 per head for access - Irony is certainly not dead and buried. Imagine if he knew that his tomb would become a capital revenue generator. That money doesn't even include and that's not even to see the entire cemetery - just half of it.

There's clearly a financial agenda at this place. I hope they bury famous people for free.

the west cemetery is well worth the money!
nov 2020
i once visited highgate during sixth form for a drawing reference photoshoot but was only able to go in the east side as the west side was booking only, but i knew i wanted to return to visit the west side. luckily i was able to book an unguided visit of the west side for my partners birthday (lovely jolly trip i know) as we were both eager to go, and i was amazed. the east side is beautiful but the west side just topped any expectation i had going into it - the circle of lebanon was unlike anything i'd ever seen, the staff dotted around the cemetery were so helpful and full of interesting info! i highly recommend to anyone even slightly considering it, it's well worth the money and i'd love to return one day for the guided tour too!

Fascinating & beautiful !
okt 2020
This is a really interesting place and absolutely beautiful! We visited on a bright Autumn day and took the tour with a fabulously knowledgeable guide. Well worth the short trip out of London on the Northern line 15 min from central London off peak. Take a short walk up the Highgate hill and cut down through Dartmouth Park Hill (a park)
