- BenVeronaVerona, New Jersey408 contributionsHuge historical impact with a muted emotional feelThis is one of those historical places that you must see because of what happened here in 1944, but unless you had a good tour guide (which we definitely did) it would be difficult to visualize on your own what occurred here. Plus, it's surrounded by a touristy town (unlike Utah Beach), which made it harder to imagine "being there" during the invasion. If you go, go with a good guide.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2023

You can imagine what was facing them as they came ashore with Germans dug into the cliffs behind. There was a a coach there when I arrived and there is a memorial on the beach.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 8 October 2023

Expansive sand beach with such a very sad history of war. Was there near the end of day so missed the cemetery. Certainly a stop for those interested in war history.

Your experience at Omaha Beach will be enhanced by visiting some of the other D-Day sites, such as museums and cemeteries, before setting foot on the beach. That way you will have some context for the incredible significance of this spot and the sacrifices that were made here.

We visited Omaha beach at low tide to get an idea of what it was like when the troops landed. The beach is huge! It's so peaceful now, what a difference from the events that took place in June 1944.

Great photo opportunities on the beach with lots of historical markers for guidance. The local shops nearby provide sovineers and alcohol that is similar to what the soldiers experienced an apple brandy.

To get a true sense of the magnitude of what took place here, the beach is best viewed in conjunction with American Cemetery and the Overlord Museum.
The beach is encroached by a growing town which is quite commercial (unlike Utah beach) with the exception of a pier and a couple of bunkers. You can walk on the beach but there is not much to see.

Perhaps the most emhpatic monuments of D-Day monuments & signs - Omaha Beach area. After having a good lunch, we continued into coast , now famous about invasion of american soldiers during WW2. Especially part of it, soldiers cemetery incl. thousands of crosses. Also one (new) monument just on the beach. When sea level is at down point, it's fascinating long beach, easy to walk. Nice place, hard to believe what really had happened there from 6th of Jun 1944 forward.

We visited as part of a tour so I can't comment on the drive to get there.
I don't know why but I didn't realize the area was still bordering people's fields and property. The beach was such a major factor in the war and it was incredible to be standing there in the same place as all of those that were lost and the heroes that survived.

Do you actually walk down to the beach and is it accessible for those with moderate walking difficulty?
Written 21 July 2023
Hello, as the beach itself is very long (kilometers) you can choose a suitable point (nearest sea) (we drove by car, so easy to choose the best suitable for us), and went back (up) towards monuments, visitor center etc. Be aware that sea water level, it's safe only when water level is at it's lowest (low tide). Coastal local road (narrow roads) are quite near sea, and there are certain walk traps,,, but eg. wheelchair would be difficult to use. At low water times sand is easy to walk, I'll try to send one photo of that.

Hello could anyone recommend the best part of omaha beach for fortifications that are left and can be visited?
Thankyou

Pointe du Hoc is the place to go first. Prior to your visit go to uTube to watch Reagan’s 1984 speech “the boys of Pointe du Hoc”. Our cemetery also overlooks Omaha Beach. Another must visit. If you want to take sand from Omaha the tourist shops sell small glass containers.

Hi, I will be travelling to Normandy with my reenacting group for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. I'm wondering is it possible to get on to the beach at 06:30 or are the beaches closed for dignitaries that day ? We would only want to be there for about 30 minutes, hopefully long before any remembrance events begin.

There was no time limit that we noticed. The beach was open to all

I agree about renting a car. Driving is quite easy in France (as long as you aren't in Paris...lol) - especially if the car has a GPS. If you had time for a full tour, my recommendation is Dale Booth Normandy Tours. We toured Omaha and Utah Beaches with him this past September and he is fantastic.

How did you get to Normandy area?
Is there a train out of Paris?
Thanks
Written 29 January 2019
We've always driven across France. It's simple, and the roads are good.
Having said that, the trains are fine and yes there's is a service from Paris ( only a couple of hours!)

how long would it take to walk rom te cemetery to Omaha beach if you had a disability?
Written 24 September 2018
The direct footpath to the beach was closed (locked gates) when we visited.
It looked quite steep with a lot of steps anyway to be honest.
We walked along the road a little, and then through the dunes and past some bunkers - probably about half a mile to the beach, but not particularly easy for people with difficulty in walking ( the beach itself is several miles long, and this wasn’t the most interesting part!)

How far is it to walk from The American Cemetry down to Omaha Beach? Timewisw, how ong would it take down and back? I have. Book a tourthat goes to the cemetery but not to the beach itself.
Thanks
Tommy

Like the previous answers we travelled by car so it is difficlt to be precise about the distance. The beach is near the cemetery but the main focal point of Omaha Beach is some distance away from the cemetary, probably 10 to 20 minutes drive.

I am planning to visit the omaha beach and the American cemetery surrounded by. I planned to take the route70 bus to there. I found that the earliest bus departs at 1245pm from bayuex and the latest bus back to bayuex is 5pm sth. Therefore i wonder if 4-5 hours are enough for me to explore here? Also I planned to live bayuex as it seems like more convenient for me to explore mont st michel and places around here. Am i making a right choice? Thank you!
Written 19 February 2018
The 1245 bus is a good idea. Spend ca. 3 hours touring the cemetery and Omaha beach !
