The area
Neighbourhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history.
The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

A brilliant Museum. A great way for visitors to Taiwan to understand its complicated history. All the exhibits come with English translations and an English language audio is included with admission. A very complete and balanced presentation of Taiwan's story -- it politics, government, culture and society. We were only able to cover the period from 1895 to the present, but wished we had more time here -- could easily spend half a day or more here. The museum is some distance from downtown Tainan, but well worth the excursion.

The museum was 3 floors, 2 of which were open the whole time with the top floor temporary exhibits (modern digital art, history of Christian healthcare missions, a VR exhibit and a history of Taiwan railways. The 2nd floor was Taiwan history from pre-European to modern times. Overall the museum was a nice experience especially for the price and the exhibits were interesting. The audio tour, while cheesy at times was very informative.

It’s under redevelopment at the time of writing and is set to reopen in July 2020. We paid NTD30 each for access to two small exhibitions: one on textbooks, and the other on Shōjo Manga in Taiwan. Both come with somewhat informative brochures, but the textbook one is only for visitors who can read Japanese or Chinese. The Shōjo Manga exhibition has some interps panels in English and was mildly interesting.
I am giving the museum an extra star for the building itself, which is a brutalist salute to concrete. But please consider postponing your visit until the museum proper reopens in July.

We visited this museum on April 20. There is a bus (#18) from Tainan Station to the museum. It is a drive of about 45 minutes.
When you pay the entrance fee you have the option to purchase an audio guide. The 2nd floor gives a good impression of the history of Taiwan. Especially the Chinese period and the Japanese occupation is elaborated. The exhibition has a lot of diorama's. Almost everything is explained in English on the information boards. The audio guide will give you much more information. If you want to listen everything on the audio guide, you will have at least 3 hours at the museum. There is not a restaurant at this museum.

Having read reviews of this museum I had a rough idea of what to expect; both in terms of the exhibits as well as the difficulty in getting there.
The museum charts Taiwan’s history from its very early days of aboriginal settlements to the modern day. We had an audio guide which helped a great deal. I agree with other reviewers in that there were parts of the exhibits that did not flow systematically and it was difficult to follow with the audio guide. There were also some parts of the exhibit in the WWII years that were in Mandarin. This included some film footage. It would have been excellent if some English narration could have been included.
There was also minimal coverage of Dr SunYat Sen and General Chiang Kai Shek and their influence on the formation of modern day Taiwan. I did see a photo of Dr Sun Yat Sen and Chinese transcripts, but nothing in English.
The only drawback to our visit was the difficulty getting to the museum. The HSR took us from Taipei to Tainan and there is a shuttle service that takes us to the ChiMei Hospital (free) and from there we took a taxi to the museum. The shuttle ride took an hour and the taxi ride 10 min.
On our way back to the Tainan HSR station, the staff called for a taxi. The ride took 20min and cost us NT $500.
Highly recommend visiting this attraction to get a good understanding of Taiwan’s history.

We took the HSR from Taipei just to go to this museum. Entry fee with audio was only NT$125 (US$5). The narrative was interesting and provided context to the many periods. We only had 3 hours which was just right. The only missing detail from the displays and narrative was the Chiang Kai Shek era and its relationship with China. If you are new to Taiwan and want to understand its culture, this place is a must. Tip: The HSR runs a free shuttle from Tainan HSR station to the Chemi Medical Centre ( last stop) and the journey takes 1 hour. Take a taxi to the Musuem which will cost NT$160. There is no direct bus to the museum. A taxi from the HSR station to the musuem will cost NT$500. The ticket office helped us get a taxi for our return trip. They were very helpful. The cafe at the museum which is at the entrance is expensive and average.

NMTH focuses on Taiwan history and culture. All the exhibtions have English translation and most of the them are interactive. The museum provides audio guide, video, short play and relative activities that allow you know more about the content of the expo. Audio guide is recommended. The museum has a children area that was designed for children. The shop sells products that have Taiwan features. Outside the museum is very spacious. Many people come here for free (not entering the museum), you can take a walk here if not in hurry.
The transportation is not very convenient though. It's far from city center and buses are not frequent. So you can enjoy the exhibitions in good quality since there's not many tourists here. Overall, it's worth visiting. It's suitable for all ages. The museum sometimes has ticket discounts, you can check the information on the official website.

Really enjoyed this museum. Great displays of the history of Taiwan, from the indigenous people thru present day. Great children's area on first floor. Small cafe with good food. Easy access for those with disabilities.

This museum is located on a ecological park. The museum is open and airy. It has a very logical flow starting with the geological history of Taiwan. The museum has excellent exhibits in well written English, Japanese, and Mandarin. The exhibits carefully document each stage of Taiwan's history as its place in the world of international trade from the 16th century to today. It highlights the role of indigenous peoples before Western discovery of Taiwan or the controlled Han migration. The economic evolution of Taiwan beginning under Japanese rule and the wide spread suffering under the KMT White Terror is well document. Most exciting is the exhibits highlighting Taiwan's peaceful transformation to a democratic country beginning with the end of the military dictatorship in 1987. This museum appeals to all ages, backgrounds, and languages. A must see for all who love Taiwan and would want to understand it better.
