There's lots of things to see and do in Montserrat, but without doubt you should do at least one trek even if it's just a small one so you can get some idea of how beautiful these mountains are. I went on a few treks so was able to get different views ans angles of these natural wonders, and my photos as good as they are simply don't do them justice. They have to be seen with the naked eye!

A recent return visit to Monastery of Montserrat after a forty-year absence proved to be just as good as the first time. The railway journey up to the summit is excellent with good views down into the valley. We arrived by cruise ship, and it was an opportunity to have a pleasant day in the country away from the crowds in Barcelona.

Montserrat Mountains are located in the center of Catalonia close to the Monistrol de Montserrat town. We came here to do a hike from the Monastery to see some chapels like Sant Dimes, Sant Benet, sant Salvador i Santa Anna and return in a circular way. Really the views of surroundings are very beautiful and the views of peaks of Montserrat Mountains like the Elephant, the Pregnant and the Mummy are fantastic. A typical excursion in these mountains. Wonderful.

Montserrat, in the Catalan language, it stands for "serrated mountain", is being considered as the heart of Catalunya for many Catalan. These serrated mountains were formed by a range of sedimentary round-shape rocks and ridges and they look spectacularly stunning all the time and from all angles.
Montserrat is only 1-hour drive/ train from Barcelona (which you can take the train from Espana rail station, for details please see the section below). Montserrat offers one of the best sceneries in Catalunya as it's not just about its Monastery, but it's also about its spectacular mountains. Only when you arrived Montserrat, you would understand why it's called the "jagged mountain" as each mountain rock looks like it was carefully carved by God.
The most popular things to do at Montserrat are i) Sightseeing the Montserrat mountains; ii) Visit the Monastery, to experience its spiritual basilica and to worship the Black Virgin; iii) Take the Funicular Rides to reach other parts of Montserrat mountain (i.e. Sant Jeroni or to Santa Cova); iv) Visit the Montserrat museum (it costs 8 Euro).
Tips:
In my opinion, the most convenient way to visit (for travellers) is to go by yourself so that you don't have the time restriction with the tours or to force yourself to visit the wine-tasting tour (unless if this is what you want, of course). Here are some of the tips (for people who wants to go by themselves) about how to get to Montserrat by trains from Barcelona:
1) You need to take the Line R5 train from Espana rail station. Espania station is a massive station so it might not be easy to find the right platform, therefore, always give yourself plenty of time before the train's departure time. It's easier to find the R5 train inside the underground station rather than trying to look for the right entrance outside the station. To find the right platform, try to look for the direction signs of "R5" or "A to Montserrat". My 2nd tip is, the R5 platform entrance is near the "Fira Montjuic" and "Sortida Exposicio" exits.
2) Trains departed and returned every hour (please check the timetable in advance!). First of all, you would need to decide whether you want to take the Cable Car or the Cremallera Funicular to go up the Montserrat mountain, as they are located at different stops at Monserrat and both tickets are different. Although the tickets have the same name & price, however, you'd have to specify which ride you would want to go with as they are not interchangeable and you cannot use a different route once you've purchased the ticket.
3) You could purchase the tickets via the ticket booths or from the tickets machines. My advice for first-timer is to approach the Tourist Information Help Desk to help you to purchase the right tickets.
4) Prices are varied and they're depending on the packages you choose. The most common tickets are the Day Return (Adults 22 Euro & Children 16.80 Euro). Personally, I would not purchase the Funicular Rides to Sant Jeroni or Santa Cova until I arrived at Montserrat. This is due to the rides to other parts of Montserrat could be temporarily closed, but the official might fail to notify the staff at Espana station in advance. The prices aren't much different anyway. (i.e. on the day I visited, the staffs at Espana station weren't aware that the Santa Cova was closed for visitors)
5) There are Tourist information help booth/centre at both Espana station and outside the monastery at Montserrat.
Montserrat was the main reason why I choose to visit Barcelona in the first place. Fortunately, I had a fantastic time there. Highly recommended if you're in Barcelona and if you're attracted by the pictures of Montserrat.

Easy to get there by train (Station Espana in Barcelona) and then the cog railway to the Monastry. About 20E per person return fare.
On the site you can visit the monastry etc and there is a vast choice of Hikes (2-3 hrs). Some are 30 minutes and easy. Inquiry at information office on site. You can buy a lunch take out on site. Fantastic views ans site. I recommend.

Montserrat is a beautiful mountain village. It is an easy day trip north of Barcelona. There is a monastery and basilica built into the unique rock formations of the mountaintop. There are hiking trails with beautiful vistas. Take a short hike up to the large cross on a cliff. It's a popular photo spot.

See the same place in "Montana de Montserrat, Montserrat". It is a wonderful place, where you can see incredible rock formations and very nice views of surroundings. A top in the region, if you like very much to do excursions.

Whilst staying in Manresa we decided to visit Montserrat Mountain, and are we glad we did.
It is easy to find and the free car park is well sign posted, it is also undercover so you will not return to a hot car.
As older visitors we opted for the Inclusive package; giving us return train journey up the mountain, unlimited ride up the funicular, access to the museum and lunch in the buffet restaurant.
The journey on the train up is spectacular and steep. On reaching the top you cannot not be inspired by the view. Then taking the funicular up an even steeper gradient you find yourself truly on ‘top of the world’. We walked on further up to find goats living on the side of the mountain.
We spent many hours on the mountain walk and decided to head down the funicular to the restaurant. This is included in the price and is an eat all you want buffet, including hot food of Spain, cheeses and desserts. The drinks were also included and beer was on tap.
We visited the stalls and shops whilst there and visited the shrine.
We ran out of time for the museum and video show.
We took the train down and again what a view from the carriage and at such a steep angle.
The special trains are really impressive.
There is a cable car from the top to the bottom but we were not sure it would take us back to the car park.
A brilliant, awe inspiring day and we cannot recommend enough.

Must-see if in Barcelona
Review of Abadia de Montserrat
Reviewed 5 days ago
Perhaps the best views in all of Northeast Spain. Beautiful monastery. Good for exercise on the walk up the mountain to the monastery. Just beware that there are two roads leading to the parking lot. If you arrive mid-morning on a nice day then you'll likely face alarming amounts of traffic and very long waits to park. You can also park on the side of the road and walk if you don't mind a 30+ minute walk up the mountain.

This tour Took me about 5 hours and was absolutely amazing. It was self paced so I didn’t need to rush my way through. Definitely something you should try if you visit Barcelona

I will only be in Barcelona for 4 days...is this place so incredible as to take a day away from the Barcelona experience? Thanks in advance for all the helpful answers...

It's a very difficult question. The place is really amazing, but Barcelona also has amazing places. If you were able to visit the attractions you most want to see in Barcelona in 3'days, yes, I will recommend you go to Montserrat. Leave early. By 7 o'clock you can take the train. In 1 1/2 h you will be there. Once up in the mountains, you can choose how much to stay. I guess you will be back in town around 4pm. It's enough time to walk a little more, have a beer and some tapas!
