Address
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

- blue047348 contributionsSuper relaxing Park/ZooSuch a lovely atmosphere here, it wasn't crazy busy and noisy so we strolled around looking at very chilled and contented animals in a really lovely setting. Easy to get lunch and plenty of tables to choose from. For a few hours away from the busy streets of Amsterdam I would highly recommend a visit.Visited April 2023Written 6 May 2023
- EggManchester, United Kingdom140 contributionsWorth a visitWe’ve been a couple times now to this zoo and it’s a really nice day out. It’s very green and there’s lots to see. My favourite animals were the giraffes and elephants. As you can expect, the drinks and food are really expensive but you can take your own in. Bottles of 500ml Pepsi were €4 and water bottles were €3 ish although you can get tap water for free!Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2023
- Breanna CMelbourne, Australia5 contributionsGreat for all ages !My fiancé and I went here on a Thursday and loved it! The open spaces and greenery of the zoo were beautiful to see. The staff were also very friendly in pointing out the animals and giving us directions. We loved as well that many of the animals are in large enclosures and are free to roam as much as possible. Would definitely return :)Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 July 2023

- Kaz6644Maryport, United Kingdom63 contributionsLovely ZooWas looking forward to visiting this place, as we never had time to go last time we visited Amsterdam. I was pleased we got to go this time. We caught a tram because we were unsure how far it would be to walk from our hotel. Got there just as it was opening. Bought a map , which you didn’t really need because everything was signposted to which direction the animals were at. It was a nice sunny day the zoo was a lovely place to visit. All the animals seemed well looked after, had plenty food and water. My favourite was the Elephants I could have watched them all day. Also the butterfly house was amazing. All the staff were friendly. Both me and my husband really enjoyed the time we spent here.Visited July 2023Written 17 July 2023
- Dtappel43 contributionsFun experience! We were surprised the variety of creatures housed at this zoo, and how much we enjoyed it. We brought our children, age 4 and 6, with us. They enjoyed seeing all the animals and the numerous areas for play. We would definitely recommend visiting the zoo.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 July 2023
- Tom JLondon, United Kingdom1,662 contributionsGood but small city zooWe came to Artis whilst on a trip in Amsterdam. The zoo is relatively small, can walk around it in about 2-3 hours. Some food and drink places were open where you can get cakes hot drinks and some hot food etc. The jaguars were out and about first thing. The elephants had a splash about in their pool which was cool and the viewing area is very good for seeing this. We found it to be a little over priced for what you get. It was €25 online or it’s €27.50 on the gate.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2023
- toriaevansCardiff, United Kingdom24 contributionsAmazing! This was definitely the highlight of the trip to Amsterdam. The zoo itself is beautiful and kept immaculately. We didn’t realise it was so big - could easily have spent the whole day here. The animals are clearly well looked after and the new lion enclosure will be excellent when finished. If I’m ever back in Amsterdam, will definitely revisit!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 August 2023
- SOPHIEEngland, United Kingdom40 contributionsHighlight of Amsterdam!ARTIS was definitely one of the highlights whilst visiting Amsterdam. The zoo, animal enclosures and gardens are beautiful and immaculate. Despite the map looking somewhat small (I recommend getting a map for 2 euros as there are no maps inside the zoo, only signposts), we underestimated how big the zoo was! We spent roughly 6 hours here (we spent an hour just watching the elephants alone!), only taking a half hour stop for lunch. Pricing is 25 euros (approx. £21.50) so considered a standard price in comparison to other zoos (remember, Amsterdam is one of the most expensive cities). Would definitely recommend this zoo.Visited June 2023Written 6 August 2023
- Ireg SdlonyerSpringfield, Massachusetts85 contributionsNice zoo, very well kept and presented, would visit again.Very well presented zoo and very well kept, everything tidy. Plenty of animals to see and place wasn't overly busy so could actually see the animals. Not many staff dotted round the place so could not ask for assistance if you needed it. Another place where you could not pay via cash. Would visit again if in the area as something to do to pass the time.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 August 2023

Am I the only person that found this place sad? The Gorilla enclosure seemed small and they were sat around looking very sad. The wolf enclosure was also very small, again the two wolves looked kind of depressed. These animals need to be in wild or at the very least in vastly wider enclosures, I'm sure it's justified by zoo's saying it's all part conservation but inner city zoo's in particular are just not a good thing. I'm not going to go hug a tree or anything but I felt that these poor creatures need to roam.

We walked here for something to do for a few hours and it didn’t disappoint! We got there for around 11ish and left around 1-1:30ish. We saw everything apart from the jaguars as they weren’t out. It has lots of offer and plenty of opportunities throughout the park for a sit down. Lots of animals, birds, insects, flowers too see. Id recommend

I loved this zoo, one of the best I've been to. Lots of interactive stuff, animal houses and places to eat/drink. A smaller zoo due to being in the center of the city but still seemed to have more animals than the bigger zoos.

Really nice zoo, enclosures didn’t actually feel like enclosures. Animals seem well cared for. Not busy at every area, some parts you had all to yourself which was great. Only downside is the aquarium section was shut due to construction which we were not made aware of plus tickets were still full price. Slightly disappointed by this.

An excellent collection of animals, insects, etc. All housed in interesting and suitable conditions. Overall the collection was in well kept and historic parkland.
Choice of eating facilities, enjoyed both lunch and a final cup of tea and cake.
The zoo particularly appeared to cater for families, discovery activities, etc. A playground for children within the zoo offered relaxing fun.

This is probably the best zoo I've visited, beautiful grounds and buildings and the way it's set up makes you feel much closer to the animals than other zoos allow although it helped that it was quiet when we visited.

A great range of animals, some of which are not on display in many other zoos. Some areas looked a little neglected or not overly-friendly to the actual animals on display (time to make it more about the animals and less about the visitors).
We went in winter and the selection of food available was somewhat disappointing (not all cafes were open).

We spent a couple of hours walking round the zoo and it really was a delight.
There are lots of animals, all in a fabulous setting. We enjoyed watching the gorilla’s, they were content in eating their way into their enrichment. It must have been some kind of sweet/savoury liquid, it was encased in a flat tube and they had to use a piece of stick to get to their reward.
The jaguar gave us a right fright as we walked down a dark passageway to see it walking towards us! We couldn’t see the glass, but were very happy when we did!
We would have stayed longer but it absolutely chucked it down.
Definitely recommend.
And what a great idea of the little pull along trucks for little ones to sit in whilst going round the zoo! Genius!

Going in the winter isn't brilliant. Also went not long after opening time which was probably a mistake. A lot of the animals still indoors and there's no access to the public for most of the enclosures. Spent a couple of hours there and was only able to see about 50% of the animals. But most importantly, they all looked well cared for and had a good amount of space to move around.

You can buy tickets at the entrance. You can spend as much time as you want here, but go! I love this zoo! Plan for at least 2 hours.

I am visiting Amsterdam in December, is the zoo open during this time? I’m wondering whether it will be too cold to go to a zoo in December. Do tickets need to be booked in advance?
