About
Walk in Shakespeare’s footsteps and be inspired at the site that was his grand family home where he lived from 1597 – 1616. One of the largest houses in the borough of Stratford-upon-Avon, it was the only family home he ever bought and is the presumed location of where he wrote his will, and indeed some of the later plays including The Tempest. Sadly the house was demolished in 1759 but it remains a historic site. Today, New Place has a new landscape of beautifully restored gardens and breathtaking sculptures inspired by Shakespeare’s family life and his works. In ‘the house next door’, an exhibition brings to life the story of Shakespeare’s New Place and its most famous occupant and his family – casting new light on Shakespeare as a father, husband, and writer. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio a copy of an original folio is featured in an exhibition dedicated to exploring its creation and legacy.

2nd stop to understand the Bard . .
We had a great time visiting the site of Shakespeare's final home. Unfortunately, later owners abused the privilege, so we only have the garden & grounds to see. And they are impressive, including the statuary based on his plays. Volunteers definitely help with the visit & they do a good job of explaining the twists & turns of the site's history. Worth a look for an hour or so . . .

Full of history - use your imagination!
New Place doesn't exist anymore. Instead, you wander around beautiful gardens where the house once stood with the support of knowledgeable guides. The story about why the house no longer stands is interesting in itself. Nash's House has a small exhibition. If you get the 3 house ticket then it's worth an hour or so of your time if the weather is good.

    Nice wander in the garden
We bought the Shakespeare Story Ticket so had entry to New Place included along with Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. This meant we weren’t too disappointed with New Pace. The volunteers made the place, without them putting things in context I don’t think we would have benefited as much from our visit. New Place House obviously doesn’t stand anymore and you wander around a lovely garden and sculpture trail and use your imagination. The volunteers told us about archeological work carried out recently at the site and it feels sad that more was not made of this at the site. Worth a wander
Thank you for your review. We were happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Shakespeare Family Homes and the archaeological information shared by our colleagues about the site where New Place once stood. We will take your feedback on board when reviewing the information talks that we schedule at the site.

We went to Shakespeare’s New Place as part of the three venue package you can buy. Really lovely place. Beautiful garden, friendly staff and a great opportunity to visit the historic building.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your visit to Shakespeare's Family Homes. We are pleased that you managed to visit, spend time in the houses and the grounds and take in the atmosphere. Hopefully, we can welcome you back in the future!

    Brilliant afternoon
Been to Stratford many times but this was the first time visiting Shakespeare's New Place and had a fantastic couple of hours there. The gardens are beautifully laid out and you could easily spend an age looking at all the little details on the ground and amongst the plants and flowers... The exhibition was incredibly interesting, despite having studied Shakespeare both at school and university I came away with new knowledge and I loved the interactive parts of it as well! The volunteers there are amazing, listened to a talk from Dave on the history of the site and he was more than willing to answer various questions afterwards and was so engaging: it really made the experience even better. Looking forward to returning again in the future!
Thank you for sharing your feedback about your visit to Shakespeare's New Place. Despite the fact the original house no longer stands, there is still a lot to learn and see and we are pleased that you enjoyed your time with us. We very much look forward to welcoming you back in the not-too-distant future.

    Well worth a visit
Shakespeare's Birthplace and Anne Hathaway's cottage are the big draws but New Place is also definitely worth seeing. It's included with the Shakespeare's Story Ticket which gives you entry to all three places for £25 or half that if you have a Gardener's World 2 for 1 card. The actual "New Place" building has long gone so what you are seeing is the site where it once stood which is now a lovely garden area. The history is explained by the guides and they help you to get orientated. It is best to listen to the talk by one of the guides when you first go in at the gate as they'll show you the original layout so you'll get more out of your visit than just wandering around.

    Memorable
This place is wonderful. The garden has been lovingly created and is beautifully tended. All in memory of William Shakespeare and to the delight of his admirers. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is one of the very best organisations of its kind in the UK. They are a credit to Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwickshire, taking their role as custodians of Shakespearean heritage seriously and looking after their sites well beyond the usual. All hail to the many volunteers and others working for hhem.
Thank you for your review. We were happy to hear that you had such an informative and enjoyable visit to Shakespeare's New Place and we appreciate the complimentary comments about the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Custodians & Guides Bring this Tour Alive
We visited Shakespeare New Place in Autumn, but to get the most from the attraction I’d advise to you visit in the spring or summer to make the most of the garden. New place no longer stands, instead it is laid to courtyard and formal gardens, best appreciated in fine weather. However, you can visit Thomas Nash’s Tudor house adjoining, that was occupied by Shakespeare daughter. The guides are very well versed in Shakespearean history, and they make the visit. For best value buy your ticket as part of the Shakespeare Story for £25

We absolutely love visiting New Place whenever we are in Stratford-upon-Avon. Highly recommend buying a full story ticket which allows you to visit the other sites and also means you can return for a year, which is excellent value if you plan to come back within the year.
The gardens are so beautiful and the inside of the house is really interesting with some fascinating exhibits
The staff are always extremely welcoming, friendly and informative. Last time we visited, we listened to a brilliant presentation from Elliot, which was funny, interesting and engaging. Highly recommend visiting New Place and looking forward to it re-opening in the spring!

Not worth the entrance fee. Not much to see and you can walk around the entire place in about 5-10 minutes.
You can see most from outside, don’t pay to go in.

Thank you for visiting New Place and taking the time to review your experiences for us, your feedback is appreciated. We take great care to explain that this is the site where New Place once stood and, after the archaeological exploration of the grounds prior to the reopening in 2016, we commissioned many art installations including the life-size bronze Hawthorne Tree sculpture to help bring the grounds to life. All of the sculptures and presentations of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets are created in materials that William would have known, oak, iron and bronze but with a concession to the durability required of an open-air site. The Great Garden is still very much a place of tranquillity, enhanced by further period planting and bronze sculptures by renowned artist Greg Wyatt, as is the authentic Tudor Knot Garden. The ‘Golden Garden’ where the house once stood has been refreshed with more Mediterranean species to reflect Shakespeare's Italian-based works. In Spring and Summer, the gardens flourish. We hope that this information will give us the opportunity to welcome you back again.

Shakespeare's New Place is a great description of new. The metal front entrance is a stark contrast to the traditional Tudor style buildings in Stratford.

We walked in just in time to be part of a group presentation with a volunteer under the cover of a cheap Coleman gazebo. At first glance, I assumed the heavy table top was maybe made from lumber recycled from the original house but alas it was something new made to look old.

The talk was long drawn with the volunteer showing multiple poster board renderings of the original house and Shakespeare's remodeled version with gables. The house was torn down with no remnants whatsoever.

The property itself is huge with a beautiful well maintained garden, but there is no "New Place", you're essentially doing a garden tour set around some new sculptures and a fake mulberry tree. What a shame that the Shakespeare Foundation couldn't plant a "real" tree.

The self guided tour at the Bard's neighbor's house really held no significance other than it was still standing. What a disappointment!

We purchased the value ticket bundle. This site is one of 3 tours which includes Shakespeare's Birthplace and Anne Hathaway's Cottage. The tickets are valid for 12 months.

Thank you for visiting New Place and taking the time to review your experiences for us, your feedback is very much appreciated. The English oak bronze studded entrance gates that you have kindly commented on are of course not intended to be a Tudor replica. Heritage guidelines in the UK do not allow us to present replications. We must apologise for the temporary awning that was necessary to offer protection to our visitors when high winds damaged the wood and canvas originals which have since been replaced. Rather than simulate the ageing of the natural materials used on the New Place site such as the ‘talk table’ you mention, the English oak, bronze and iron were installed new in 2016 so that visitors are able to witness over time the same authentic patination that has occurred on the surrounding Tudor buildings since they were built. The beautiful Indigo Falcon Hotel opposite is demonstrating the same process since its restoration a few years ago. We do restrict the length of our talks but visitors are very interested in the surprising history of New Place so presenting a number of images is usually well received, apologies if we didn’t deliver an engaging presentation on this occasion. There are two original mulberry trees in the Great Garden at the rear of the site but the stunning bronze sculpture is actually of a Hawthorn Tree by Jill Berelowitz and is designed to convey the power of Shakespeare's ongoing influence. We do hope that you will visit us again with your Shakespeare’s Story ticket to learn more about the story behind the sculptures.

My opinion: A huge disappointment and not worth a visit. You pay to hear someone ( a staff member or volunteer) talk for 30 minutes about a place where Shakespeare used to live and where the house no longer exists. Basically it's a garden filled with tacky sculptures and an over-done commercialisation of Shakespeare with signage of quotes from plays and so forth peppered all over 2 gardens. Yes, the gardens are well landscaped and pretty but that's it. The entrance to this "New Place" tourist attraction should be a red flag. A giant metal gate that hardly reflects Shakespearean times. After our visit, we met a local who informed us that originally one of the gardens was very rustic and more natural and was a tucked-away place of peace and calm that was open for free to the local community and visitors. Sounds like they should have kept it that way. Shame.

Thank you for visiting New Place and taking the time to review your experiences for us, your feedback is very much appreciated. We take great care to explain that this is the site where New Place once stood, but we do understand the frustration that this, like Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace in London and Henry V’s ‘pleasance’ at Kenilworth Castle, has become lost to us, leaving just the rich archaeology and the need to tell the site’s story. In some parts of the world, building replicas of lost buildings has been successful but the heritage guidelines in the UK preclude this possibility at a museum attraction, to avoid confusion. For this reason, we created many art installations including the bronze Hawthorne Tree sculpture, the English Oak bronze studded gates along with the ‘Talk table’, in natural materials, mindful that patination would take place over time as the materials weather naturally. The sculptures and presentation of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets are similarly created in materials that William would have known, oak, iron and bronze but with a concession to modernity with polished stainless steel, reminiscent of silver in appearance but with the durability required of an open-air site. The Great Garden is still very much a place of tranquillity, enhanced by further period planting and bronze sculptures by renowned artist Greg Wyatt, as in the authentic Tudor Knot garden. The ‘Golden garden’ where the house once stood has been refreshed with more Mediterranean species to reflect Shakespeare's Italian based works and to cope with increased temperatures. We hope that this information will help enhance future visits and that you will give us the opportunity to welcome you back again.

Included as part of the Shakespeare’s story ticket, which gives you access to Anne Hathaway’s cottage, and Shakespeare’s birthplace. You can revisit in 12 months free of charge if you wish to do so.

Shakespeare’s new place is a five minute walk from Shakespeare’s birthplace, which is located in the town centre. There is parking facilities available opposite however, this may be limited during busy periods

There is a talk from staff, which happens after every half an hour, I believe? You visit the exhibition, which takes no more than 10 minutes.

I personally didn’t enjoy this experience, because there wasn’t much to see, however, visited due to the ticket access

As well as a very informative talk that our colleagues deliver sharing the history of the site, and the different buildings and owners, we also host a range of different events across the Shakespeare Family Homes which often show the homes in a different light.
